I am one of them. Did 21 years as an officer and an instructor. Screwed up my back and was forced to retire. I was a driver long before I put on the badge. Now I am back. This time I have a Class A with all the endorsments.
so what did you do before driving a truck?

Glad to see your post. I retired from LE in 2002 and went out and got my CDL. Worked for a national carrier for a short time until wife said, "get your arse" home. Got a local job delivering mostly milk and other products to a coffee shop chain. Had several routes in the New England area but delivered mostly in the financial district in downtown Boston and loved it. Moved to Florida to retire again but need to get back to driving. Wife said, "get your arse out of the house." Looking for local with lifting but if she wants me "OUT" will go OTR.

I did a little bit of a few things before getting into trucking, from working in restaurants to auto parts warehouses to cleaning and even ran my own business.

Entered the work force during the recession of the 80's. Wanted to be a welder / fabricator but could not find steady work, much less an apprenticeship. Ended up as a welder/ mechanic at a truck shop and got the bug to drive.
Drove for an O/O for 2 years and bought my first truck. That was in 1992.rdean1109 Thanks this. -

I started as a mechanic back in 87. Did that and joined the guard, became a trucker. Got the "grass is greener" syndrome and got a degree. Was self-employed until 9/11 and then the guard decided they had better plans for me. Came back and became a process engineer and they tanked in 2009. 2600 out of 5300 employees laid off. Went for my AA in Land Survey/Civil Engineering and that sucked as bad as mechanical engineering.
Wife asked one day what it was I had always wanted to do....
And that truck now sits in my drive-way.Attached Files:
