I think it's more secure to have a spare key with me rather than "hidden" outside the truck someplace. I suspect the people that break into trucks find spare keys hidden in the same place over and over. If my spare is on me at least I will know if it's taken. If it's hidden on the truck you either put it where you can find it easily or you find it's missing when you need it. If you carry a pet, carry a spare key.
So where do you hide your spare key?

I drove 90s-era Petes. Even though I tried to lock it to see if I could get locked out, and never found a way. One night I got locked out of it. Thankfully the TA mechanics told me how to break in. My dog stepped on the lock/unlock knob while I was out, but I had a spare in my pocket.Another Canadian driver Thanks this.

Right pants pocket is for the key I take out of the ignition.
Left pants pocket is for the spare, and it is always there - even at home.
And how do you lock yourself out of the truck if you remove the key to lock the door?
Because you should always lock the door with the key - not with a button.Albertaflatbed, Another Canadian driver and tscottme Thank this. -
The problem with carrying the spare key in your wallet or on you is that you can still lock yourself out. If the key is hidden outside, no matter how you lock yourself out, the key will still be there. Yes, do make sure the key is hidden very well and cannot fall. Hide your key in a place where you must get dirty in order to access it.

Sorry, but if my spare key is in my other pocket I will never get locked out, and I won't get dirty getting to it.

Thought I was the only one who did it that way..Another Canadian driver and D.Tibbitt Thank this.

Yep.
Mine were on the backside of the wire loom in the firewall leading into the dash.
The wire ties just looked like part of the loom. I don’t know if I could trust a magnetic hide a key with how rough these trucks on a Michigan road.
Plus I hate crawling under a vehicle on a snowy wet nightAnother Canadian driver, 91B20H8 and PE_T Thank this. -
You have a method that works for you, but I can guarantee you some drivers have still gotten locked out by carrying keys in their wallets or clothing.Another Canadian driver Thanks this.
