So why haven't more driver's pushed for detention pay?

    So i woke up at 2 am on an emergency load. I hauled ### from Georgia to west Florida and arrived on time at 11 am. It's now 3 pm and we're still not loaded. My trainer and I disagree about sitting here for 4 hrs unpaid. I say the customer called in 5 company trucks for 11 am, and not one is loaded 4 hrs later... the shipper should be paying by the hour for each truck and driver sat delayed. Trainer has the old school mentality that it is what it is and i don't know what I'm talking about. Well, when my trucks were called in on an emergency, they were paid for by the hr. If they customer delayed, my trucks and labor were paid. No wonder why most guys go local. And no wonder why i chose a dedicated account. I could never put up with the abuse you otr guys take regularly

    you have to remember, your emergency does not constitute an emergency for someone else.


    now too, you were a wrecker driver????

    of course you got paid from the time you either left your home, or the shop for the emergency call.

    in trucking, it is always a hot load or an emergency customer.

    do you think you should get detention pay..??

    YES, of course, once you do at the very least 2 hours of waiting upon arrival, at least nearly every company i ever worked for, went by the 2 hour rule.

    some companies, as soon as you call and say you arrived, your pay clock starts.

    you will always be "free labor, or your time doesn't matter to us time"

    this is the way of trucking (like your trainer says), unless everyone got together and fight this, it'll never materialize.

    In about 30 hrs i will not have to worry about this lol. I'm almost finished training finally. This is a true emergency load for the pending hurricane coming in. They should pay. I mean i hauled ###. Almost 500 miles, and this includes heavy traffic in Jacksonville and orlando on the way in and still made it on time only taking required dot 30 min break. I had been holding my bladder for 2 hrs to get here on time. LAST time i do that.

    Yep forget about what you did before.

    It doesn't count.

    Pay after 2hrs is the standard.

    My previous company the clock started at the 2hr mark and you didn't actually get paid till the 3rd hour.

    My current company they stay on the shippers/receivers to get the truck moving. I rarely ever wait more than an hour to get loaded/unloaded and out of the gate......the very rare malwart live to be the exception.

    That's the difference between a good private fleet and just another #### bottom feeder.

    Since this was an emergency load and the drivers did their very best to get to the cust ontime they should be compensated for something if not from the cust then their company.Then again it may not have been an emergency load after all,dispatch likes to put a scare into the drivers so they don't diddle dally around.I learned to have the( ill get there when I get there attitude).

    oh...ok....an impending disaster emergency......

    most emergencies in trucking are, they ran out of toilet paper in the CEO's office, and his secretary was sick (literally) and tired of using her tongue to clean his arse...

    Very true lol I've been on those 'hot gotta get it there customer is waiting' loads before only to get there and find out the appt wasn't till the next day.

    After 2 of those I didn't push any harder than normal to get it there.

    Ive had more customers tell me I don't know why your dispatcher told you to hurry up and get here its going to be a couple hrs or longer before we ld/unload you.

    Ya. No more of that. Well the first truck finally got loaded. All team trucks here. But I've been up for 13 hrs. So I'll hope my trainer can run for at least 6 once we leave so i can sleep.

    Welcome to trucking...work for a company that pays detention. Guess that doesn't answer your question but I am sure by now you have noticed drivers can't come together on anything to affect change.
