Some drivers talk like a few miles out of route is no big deal. I guess it depends on the company. I would worry most if something came up while out of route.
So you get paid to drive back home as well?

BigJohn I am curious are you out on the road and have internet access? I bet once I become a trucker I will chat here more often with my fellow truckers
-
No, right now I am wrapping up a broadband project and trying to get the money together to buy another truck. I have too much time on my hands right now. -
Haha I always have free time as a freelance programmer. As long as I have my laptop and internet connection I am happy. Truck driving would have been out of the question for me back then before the internet and the only source of fun was hanging out with friends.

I had a Ft. Worth to Albuquerque run that had an extra day and a half on it giving me the time to do a 34hr reset. My dispatcher gave an option of a motel for two days in Albuquerque or 250 unpaid out of route miles to come home to El Paso and they'd cover the extra fuel. I chose the latter.
BigJohn54 Thanks this. -
I thought you could drive all you want as long as you stay in the same municipality, and not be required to show it on logs?
Does that not count when on a 34?

I think you are speaking of "Personal Conveyance" with respect to HOS. Yes if the right conditions are met, it is legal. The question is will your company want you running up miles on their truck at sixty cents a mile for your personal entertainment? -
Yea if u get a shower

Not all company's are so restrictive on parking and down time, the company I drive for lets us drop a trailer and bobtail on our resets, if I want to go to see a movie or go to a restaurant other than the one at the truckstop, I go, as long as I get permission where I drop, and as long as its secure, (I use a kingpin lock as well as a gladhand lock) Its better than sitting in the cab the whole 34 hrs, I have even taken a cab into town to see the sights, waiting for a shower is no problem, even if I have to wait, its usually only a few minutes at the most, Walmart's that allow parking are getting harder to find, I have been asked to move on many occasions, I usually try to find small travel centers to park, they usually only accommodate just a few trucks, don't have the amenities the big boys have but are much quieter, sometimes they charge, but my company reimburses me for it.

Having a laptop with the internet is a must, you can get info on any place you have to take your reset, research things to do, places to go and how to get there, via public transportation or by driving there.
