If the someone is going to "feel pressure" from a dumb black box doing their logging, then they really need to find another line of work. If they can't handle an electronic log without going on prozac, then they are going to vapor lock in a blizzard or a Chicago rush hour. Guys, all the e-log is doing is logging. It isn't your mommy. It doesn't have a direct connection to the FMCSA and some dweeb is sitting at a screen just waiting for you to goof. If someone is going to be paranoid over an e-log, they need to be taken in for a drug test, because if they have that degree of paranoia, they must be smoking something illegal.

Whether it is right or wrong, indifferent, leveling the playing field, forcing compliance, or the end of trucking as we know it really doesn't much matter. The powers that be are behind it and it is going to be a reality for everyone very soon. You really can't expect things to go along like they have since 1939 when we are in the 21st century. Government, lawyers, activists, carriers, and the list goes on and on are behind this stuff, and especially the folks that have a vested interest in the mandating of the technology so they can make a buck from it. If some think that some sort of shutdown action is needed, by all means, lead the way. If not, then either learn to adjust to this stuff or bail out while the getting out is good. After all, no one is forcing anyone to drive a truck. If it is going to cause someone so much grief, then now is the time to make plans for a new career.

Because so many allow it and are unwilling to fight for their freedom powers to be need taken back a bunch of notches and not just in trucking.

I like Todd Spencer's quip about the megas and the ATA wanting to "level the playing field".........think Hiroshima: because THAT'S the kind of "level" they are aiming for!!

Exactly! They only want to gain FURTHER advantages, not level the playing field... their overhead is ALREADY less than 50% of mine based on fuel costs, equipment discounts (they pay about 60 cents on the dollar for new equipment), not having to insure (legitimately) each piece of equipment and driver in their fleets, tire discounts, repairs @ $25 per hour shop rates, etc... I've been at this 16 years, 14 as an O/O... I've done L/P, Lease-on and now, independent with 6 other O/O's leased onto my numbers... the only debt I carry is 1/2 of the purchase price of my 3 new trailers, financed @ 6% ... My business model works FOR ME... it may not work for anyone else... I don't really care. I DO care about the gummint telling ME I've got to do things THIER way at increased cost to me so the mega carrier execs can buy a bigger yacht!

The megas are "leveling the playing field", so to speak. Small companies and O/O's offer something the megas can't. SERVICE. knowledgable drivers. And getting it there quicker.

Yep... and if the A.T.A. gets it's way, we'll all be forced to govern our trucks at 62 or less... just to further "level the playing field" taking THAT small advantage away from us as well... I've NEVER competed on price... In 16 years, I've only had ONE late delivery of 3 hours and that was due to massive blizzards enroute ... One or 2 you can plan for, but FOUR in a row over 2 days was just unbelievable! That's what happens when you start in Boston and end in Salem, OR!

Dude you really are a problem as I see it to this industry in fact a corporate lap dog! Of you'll remember our dear Annie decided to make the rules more complex which required the use of the e logs and what has been ignored is a rumor that she owns a small fleet herself which should be grounds for her dismissal as conflict of interest.

The "box" doesn't make you stop the truck any more than paper does. And "big brother" isn't going to "ding" you if you go over on the box, because big brother isn't watching! At least not unless you get yourself into something like that Walmart driver did, then they look. And in 395.2 of the regs, the driver can go over the 11 if unforeseen traffic or weather conditions cause a problem and the driver could have normally completed the run or gotten to a parking area and if those conditions were unforeseen. I have gone over the 11 on E-logs for these situations a few times, made a note in the logs reflecting that, and there has never been an issue. And they were not tampered with by anyone at the carrier. I have all the e-logs on my personal computer, downloaded from Qualcomm, from the first day of going on e-logs two and a half years ago. Had my records selected for audit when DOT did a random check at the carrier, and nary an issue. This isn't rocket science, but you do have to use a little bit of brain capacity. There is 14 hours in which to play around with the 11 driving hours. Some make it sound like there is only 11 hour in total to work with. And if the 14 is going to be an issue, you are going to know about it long before you get to the end of the 14, so communicate that to who you have to and adjust accordingly.

There is no reason to be racing the clock with an e-log any more than on paper. And this idea that all of a sudden with e-log, that folks are having to race the clock. I have been seeing the very same thing for well over 3 decades, long before the E-log thing even was a blip on the radar. Anyone remember the national 55 speed limit? And what were trucks doing then? Racing around like they had to be somewhere yesterday. Even songs and movies made about it. Ever hear of the Monfort lane? And there was no e-logs. I find it fascinating that it is glamorized to race around like your hair is on fire back in the day, but demonized if one has an e-log in the truck now. Drivers will come up with a million excuses why they need to run with the peddle against the firewall. As I did on paper, I run the same on e-log. Nothing has changed. I generally run between 62 and 65 mph, even though the truck will do 100. I see no reason to change anything. I get to where I need to be, on time, and if a problem were to crop up, I know how to call and let folks know and adjust.
