Hey flatbedder, I have read a lot of your posts back from 2015 on up and really appreciate your knowledge of this industry. I am new to this and would like some insight. My company owns a 2011 f450 and a 43' flat three car hauler. We are wanting to carry cars and other freight. We already have our usdot, mc, and insurance. What would be our best way to start getting loads?

Hello everyone,
I've been studying and doing my homework on becoming a hotshot trucker and starting my own business at this. I'm going to work under my own authority and am in the process of getting all of my paperwork and insurance squared away.
I've been running the idea of buying my own truck and trailer soon, but then I came across an advertisement for a local hotshot trucker that is retiring and is trying to sell his truck, trailer and loyal business contacts to someone starting out.
My question is, should I pursue buying his equipment and business contacts and start out that way or get all my own equipment and contacts/shippers?
He has a 2012 Dodge 3500 dually equipped with 70 gallon slip tank, airbags, exhaust brake, the works for hotshotting, yet has higher miles and he has a 30 foot 2008 PJ gooseneck trailer.
If I were to buy his equipment, his business contacts would use me to haul their loads meaning I wouldn't need to go on load boards. He has averaged about $7,500-8,000 gross working about 3 days a week part time.
What do you guys think, should I do it for $60k, or maybe $50k if i can get him down?

Also I'm determined to work 5-6 days a week and be very flexible with my business so I know I could make even more if I put my mind to it.
Also I'm a journeyman diesel mechanic currently so having to maintain or rebuild an engine on a higher mileage dodge wouldn't faze me.

Will his clients giving him that great paying work be willing to sign a contract with you guaranteeing you that same work at the rates he's saying they're pay him? I'd want a guarantee before buying his older equipment.
I'm not saying this guy is doing this but you need to know people have been trying to sell trucking companies claiming that ithey cone with great paying work for decades. Unfortunately once a person buys the company the great paying work talked about isn't there. The last thing you want to do is pay $50,000 or $60,000 for a older truck amd a trailer that many of us would consider to short for this type of work.Silver Star NW and taodnt Thank this. -
His trailer may not be to short for the type of work he’s doing. I should’ve worded that a little different. He could be running into mountain communities, small businesses, even residential that my require a shorter trailer? For the tyoe of work most of us are doing though, a trailer with 40’ of deck space is preferred.
If you’re still considering this deal, just be sure to protect yourself. I’ve seen similar deals pop up many times over the years. Even had a guy in my town buy out a company thatsupposedly came with plenty of high paying work. . After he paid out a large sum of money all he ended up with was a older truck and trailer and. Bunch of excuses why they didn’t have any loss for him. He was scammed.Silver Star NW Thanks this. -
