Definitely do the nursing thing. My daughter's getting her RN and looking forward to a new hospital (Presbyterian) opening soon in Rio Rancho where she hopes to get work. Trucking is a tough, tough racket. No romantic adventure here, just gritty tedium of the road. Invest in your own skills.
So you want to "own " your own company

If you've never driven a class 8 or commercial truck then it'll be all but impossible to get a truck or your own authority because you won't be able to get insurance. Most insurance companies won't insure you if you don't have at least 2 years of experience. Some companies that you lease to can get you covered but other wise you've got a long hard road ahead

Seeking info on "UCR' registration.
I went to their website at : https://www.ucr.in.gov/
tried to apply for 2010, but received a message that they were not accepting applications.
As an O/O with my own authority , due I have to register with them?
Any info would be appreciated.

anightwind,
Not to correct you in any way, but I'm a new driver and a new O/O and I did not have a problem getting affordable insurance.
crusin -
just curious, but what's your interpretation of affordable? i may have to shop where you shop, if nothing gets my quotes lower then what they've been.

You'll need to register with them, but as of now, they don't have their registration fees for 2010 settled yet. Stay tuned for that. There should be some information on the site when the 2010 registration is due.
Kudos to you for knowing what you need to do and taking action! -

Progressive told me they don't do insurance for anyone going over a 500 mile radius, so I gave them the 1-finger salute and found an insurer who will do it for $5977 annually.

While $7300/yr isn't the worst quote on the books, you have to factor in the coverage angle they have. No hazmat - absolutely unh-uh forget it. And that 500 mile bubble from some places will barely get you into the next state. This really puts them on the average/expensive side of the fence.
I have Progressive insurance on my other stuff, but they're no match for truck specific insurance carriers when it comes to trucks. And btw, for those who think that's the TOTAL cost of insurance -
- that figure is for cargo and liability only. I'm paying $265 per month just for physical damage on the truck and trailer with gap coverage and a $1k deductable.
If full insurance for an owner/operator doesn't cost you somewhere around a grand a month, you probably don't have very much insurance.slabrunner Thanks this.
