Hi,
I have some experience, but not enough to get the jobs I want. It's frustrating. I was not offered a job that paid $1k a week because I have 2 months too few of experience. I really could use $1k/week!
I drove for 6 months at Werner and the pay was not great. In fact, before I left, I was making less than my younger sister who was working at McDonalds at the time. I Want to live in another country. Anyway, I piddled-around for a while and did some bespoke tailoring, then I went to IL where I had a blast doing seasonal, local grain-hauling. That was a lot of fun. The pay was pretty respectable, and I was treated with respect by the company. Hats-off to Brown's Fertilizer and Chemical in Carmi, IL. If you are are in the area and need fertilizer of feed, go there. They're a good, family-owned company.
Anyway, I got 4 months at Brown's and 6 at Werner. I ran a yard spotter at ITS in Mount Vernon for 3 months, but no one takes that as experience, because it was not on the road. I wanted to go on a regional or local lane with them, but that never happened. Sitting around on a yard, in the hottest months of the year, without A/C was a deal-breaker for me.
I'm back in Greenville, SC and looking for some decent-paying local or regional work. I would LOVE to go home at night. That way, I could do things like sew vestments or re-leather the action on a pipe organ I want to give to a Greek Orthodox church.
I am doing some temp work that is local and the pay is decent. Sometimes, assignments end and I get more free-time than I need.
I am thinking about signing-up with McElroy, TMC, or Boyd Brothers. I'm interested in doing flatbed and like the "home almost every weekend" idea. I would like to do minimal tarping. What do you think about these companies? Being gone in the week might not permit me to have much of a hobby, but if I can pay the bills and still go to Church, that's good enough.
Thanks

Boyd Bros requires 2 yrs exp unless you are just out of school. Plus they tarp almost every load or at least my bf has. If you do get the exp they require though I know you are in a good spot. My bf is through there quite often. Good luck to you.

Here's some weekend at home companies:
Jordan Carriers
McElroy
Maverick
Builders Transportation Co.
Do online applications before any phone calls so the trucking company has time to look over the application before talking to you. This is especially important if you don't have the experience they normally look for. If they're short on drivers and they're looking at your application, many times they will bend their own hiring rules.
You want to live in another country? Philippines is cheapest; summertime 12 months a year. "Philippine Retirement Authority" will show how to do that; it's on Google.Last edited: Apr 24, 2014

Maybe those of you with more experience can correct me,.. but from my limited experience and view point on local (Home nightly) and regional (Home weekly),.. I personaly enjoy having more 'quality' time while home,.. then being home more often.
For example,.. I started out in the tow and transport business back in the 80's. Even then it was very long hours and being on 24hr call sucked. But I was young,.. I was home almost every night or day,.. I could get by with 2 - 3 hrs of sleep back then and still remain sane. There is no way I could maintain that kind of schedule at my age now.
Recently before I went OTR I was hauling cars. I was out all week running auction cars to various dealers. I figured being home weekends would be ok. You work your tail off all week. You end up home late Fri night,.. sometimes early sat morning. You spend most of sat sleeping. Then sat night you end up doing laundry and going to Wally hell to get things ready to go out all week again. Sun you give momma some luvin, maybe have time to take her out.. just to leave out Sun night to pick cars up Mon morning and work your tail off all week again. What kind of life is that? Yeah I was home weekends,.. but it sucked. Anyone else have a similar experience running weekly? Is it any better anywhere else running weekly?
I am an O/O now and I do pretty much what ever I want. My truck is paid for,.. other than fuel,.. my expenses are minimal. I was a company driver here as well,.. and as a company driver my deal was 4 - 6 weeks out with minimum 6 days home time. The down side is that you missed a weeks worth of work and your paycheck did reflect that. But I grossed on average $1500 - $1700 weekly,. so it didnt really hurt to miss a paycheck. I was happy with that arrangement.
I dont know how you guys do it,.. but when I come in off the road. I dump all my crap in the back of my pick up,.. head to the house,.. kisses and hugs,.. then I hit the shower, brush my teeth,.. and its ni nigh time till I get enough sleep to replenish my batteries. The next day I do laundry and get all my crap from out of the pick up. Give momma some luvins,.. fart around on the computer till she gets my dinner ready,.. then we snuggle on the couch watching pay per view movies till its sleepy time or maybe some more luvin time. The rest of the week is usually spent relaxing around the house during the day,.. maybe take my car to the track,.. give momma a couple date nights to show her how I feel,.. but its pretty relaxing for the most part. Then come Mon morning I'm heading out to get my next load. As an O/O I havent changed my routine one bit. I do have plans later once I've accumulated a bank roll, that I will try to periodically spend 2 weeks at home. See how that goes and hopefully it doesnt screw with my money.
I guess my point here is that this is trucking,.. I have yet to see anyone in this industry make a decent living (Enough to own your own home and support a family) working just 8 hours a day 5 days a week. It would be nice,.. but even as an O/O,.. that option just isnt there.
For young guys, particularly young guys with young kids at home.,. being home is important. But how do you cope with minimal quality home time? I am of the opinion that OTR just isnt meant for a young guy. There is just too much going on in his life for him to be a quality OTR driver. Not saying he cant do a good job. Just that his mental focus wont be 100% where it needs to be most of the time. Mistakes will eventually happen.
Hurstduck65, SMTatham and AfterShock Thank this. -
