I was somewhere in the backwoods hills between Atlanta and Asheville, N.C. several years ago, and ran across a Mack graveyard. There were about 50 or so B & R models, old cab overs [ H ?]. Wanted to stop and look, but plenty of 'KEEP OUT' signs and no place to pull over. Sure wish I could go back, find that place , and look around.Back in early 70's, friend of mine used to have an old B-75 w/ sleeper, twin stick, seems like he had a 318 in it.It was fast. Let it sit in Alabama one night when he broke down, came back next day and it had been stolen. One of the prettiest, older trucks I can remember.

Those were the days to truck.

Pile of garbage??? Friend of mine has a super ten behind a cat that dyno'd 850 hp to the ground. Grossing 95k hauling grain with a hopper in the hills of PA. Still running strong and the nicest shifting transmission I ever drove.

If that's true... Then why is that transmission still not in production? I know the few times that I used a super 10 you had to use the engine brake to lower the RPMs fast enough so you could shift. Now they were a good 5 speed tranny. Even the old 2 speed rear ends shifted easier. And faster.

When I'm in the high range (gears 5,6,7 & 8) and I'm going to shift between low & high do I double clutch or just push the clutch in once?

I will be using the clutch. I'm not that good to float yet. So that pedal on the left.

It's all to do with your RPMs and timing. If you have to high RPMs you might even loose the gear. All double clutching is timing . Instead of going one Mississippi two Mississippi you push down the clutch let it up and push down the second to engage the transmission. Most transmissions that you have today are easier to shift. In the back years, most transmissions didn't even have syncronized gears but gear going into gear, and if you missed you would hit the front of the gear, and not a bunch of small gears. Then you would run your RPMs between 1700 and 2200. Now depending how heavy I am I will normally go between 1250 to 1300 and 1700. Some go lower but I'm normally over 80,000. And before you shift take your time. You aren't a Drag racer. I hear in truck stops some shift 8 gears in the first 30 ft of movement . Most of the time with these larger engines you can skip gears, not have to split gears like on a 13 , and when your slowing up and need to shift. In high range you still have those two gears on the far left side out of your H patern.. Same with a 9 speed. It's that gear below reverse. Little trade secret. I normally pull big trailers have an 18 speed. Never split the bottom gears, and normally on fairly flat ground will split 8 and 9 gears and that's it. But to answer your question.. Timing between shifts.. Every engine and transmission you can and do different things. It's just getting used to the truck.

When we trained on the 10-speed in school we did 2 hour sessions and by the 3rd day I had it pretty much down so hopefully I'll pick up were I left off. However I haven't shifted in a couple weeks. I'll talk to the guy tomorrow doing my road test if I'm confronted with a 13-speed and see how he wants me to go about it. Maybe shift it like a 9 or a true 13. I'll probably get the latter but that's ok cause I'll give it my all and see what happens. Hopefully it won't be that bad and they afford me the opportunity to perfect it over time.

Once you learn it. It's like walking . You just get back in the groove.most road tests are with empty trailers.. So try. Shifting like and 8 speed with splitting the top gear. And if its a ten don't forget 6th gear. I don't do many 10 s but when I do.i still think its a 13 and try to skip 6th.
