What year truck ? If it's a 2007 or older 1 million then a rebuilt engine then your good to go. 2008 or newer 600k is when your emissions is toast and you need a new truck.
Some numbers for new O/O

Just so you know, that's a kid that's not even out of high school.
New trucks get great fuel mileage. Late 03 to 14s get terrible fuel mileage. 97ish to early 03 was the sweet spot of low maintenance costs and good enough fuel mileage. Those were the years that gave us the efficiency of electronic controlled engines for fuel economy but not the emissions related problems and expense that started with engine model year 03.
If it was me I'd be looking for a well maintained 2000 to early 2003 ddec iv powered truck. 12.7l if running no more than 100k lb. Gross. 14l if running loads over 100k lbs. -
I'd not even consider a modern truck that didn't have an APU from the start.
Idling is what kills modern trucks. Cheap fuel.
There's some savvy involved with this.slow.rider, Bean Jr., 86scotty and 4 others Thank this. -
What you said is a lot like what I said.... and from my experience running trucks (I've seen with my own eyes OK,you can't say im wrong because I'm young) I love those Ddec4 engines same for the 3406E. Now I will say that if tuned correctly a non bridge engine Acert can do well. We hauled milk with them. We got 6.9 to 7.0 mpg average consistently, newer trucks we run get around 6.7 mpg and pull horrible with only a 50 HP difference. The old trucks had 3.55s the newer trucks have 3.25s also the newer trucks are aero t680s and prostars and 379s were the older trucks. My profile pic has one of the 379s. I have pics of the 379s and a pic of the prostar if you want proof. I don't know why you bring my age up. I have been in trucking 8 years and gave learned from my father, grandfather and a small company owner (He had the 379s one which was a rare X model). The peterbilts pulled hills like there was nothing in there way,the aero trucks slow down to about 45 to 50 mph. In comparison the 370hp N14 we run occasionally pulls the same as the 455hp multitorque 1650/1850 Packard motor.... the N14 has 1450 or 1550 can't remember. Infact it says 370/435 on the plates does that make it also a multitorque motor that changes with cruise control ? I don't know Cummins very well. I know Cat and Detroit better because that's what I have been around more.Coffey, Bean Jr., Farmerbob1 and 1 other person Thank this.

My ISX is 450HP / 1650. 670K miles / 7.3 mpg lifetime. 3.58 gears
Another Cascadia I just picked up has DD15 / 455HP / 1650. 370K miles / 7.8 lifetime. 3.55 gears.
Both 10 speeds.Coffey, Tug Toy, Farmerbob1 and 1 other person Thank this. -
I'm doing heavy haul. Most days I'm in the high 90s to 100k gross range.

Farmerbob1 Thanks this. -
Also I'm not stupid my phone is. It can't spell Paccar unless I manually tell it that's the correct spelling
Bean Jr. and Farmerbob1 Thank this. -
What is "ddec"? Is mileage similar between the 12.7 and 14 at 80,000 lbs?
-
Ddec is engine family. I havent run a 14l before so I can't comment on that, but they don't get as good fuel mileage.
Farmerbob1 Thanks this.
