I deleted that post, as it was not peaceful enough. But you right. This authority of mine does not give me any edge when those leased on can do better. This is the last year I am trying.I need to be grossing over 200K to make any sense out of it.
The only people I know of pulling in anywhere close to 200k a year aren't pulling dryvans, either for themselves or somebody else.
Listen up. Own authority is costly and all costs combined are between 90 -100K per year before you even pay yourself. You need to gross over 200K not to be ridiculed by company drivers. Dry vans are specific too, you gotta run, run, run like a freaking hamster on a wheel to get to that number. Forget about attending a Mass at you Church every Sunday, all you can do is to go to one of those TA/Petro chapels. Go out there OTR, do resets at truck stops and don't come home until you gross that 17-20K every month. There will be masters that will gross 8K every week, I am not saying they don't exist but it is not going to happen to an ordinary guy. If you are God fearing ordinary Joe, who thinks about his own authority, think about starting with a reefer or an open deck.
I was done about the same as you. I pulled mostly contract freight from carriers im leased to. Im 70% reefer .
Could be worse. Like some of these poor chaps that sign onto a $3,700 a month truck payment pulling a dry van where $1.59 a mile is considered a "decent" rate. Hang in there, Joe. Spring is just around the corner
Btw, I'm considering buying a refer van now that my dry van is paid off. I think that's where the money is on my lane. No more dry dog food for me! It'll be ice cream & frozen vegetables from here on on out!
Im still getting offers for 3.75 4 on ice cream. Since Japan ordered 50metric tons of pork those rates are up as well. China being the largest consumer of pork has a swine flu epidemic that wiped out their pooulation. China owning Smithfield keep that in mind. I talked to a washout guy in a IA pork plant he is doing 150 washout per day. Alot of the loads are slabs going overseas
I called on load last week. It was only 450 miles with 2 additional quick picks of 3 pallets each. The broker was offering $1800 but made it clear they were ready to deal. Then I realized he had posted the load in the dry van section, instead of the refer section.
I got an offer 3400.00 7 pallets of Ice Cream. Ft Wayne to Kroger in Forest Park Ga. . I asked whats up broker said nothing customer needs the ice cream. Yea there's money to be made . We just gotta hustle a little harder and stop taking there bs rates. These elogs have played right into the brokers hand. People are booking loads for a week. With junk rates . Does anybody look at the earnings reports of these brokers besides me. TQL showing good profit margins for 3 yrs in a row now. Of 3.6%.
