PFC, don't read me wrong. I want Ms. Sailing to succeed. I want her to get so annoyed with me that she succeeds, does extremely well and becomes a top notch mentor if for no other reason than to tell me, two years from now, "Look! I did it! Now, what do you have to say about it?" To which my response would be, "I knew you could all along."

Well, with everything that's been said ... Wow! Um, well, there are definitely more things in trucking that are going to piss you off. One thing is there aren't a ton of female drivers in the first place ... dang shame if you ask me ... and the veteran ladies all learn to be as slick as a duck when it comes to dealing with ###es. There are dock workers and foremen that you'll deal with that are far worse than some your mentors have been. (Yes there are also good ones, I know.) But I have seen drivers (male and female) given crap simply because of the way they carried themselves at a meat packing plant.
My point is simple. Use the issues with your mentors to grow a thicker skin. Learn to roll with the punches and recognize when things are REALLY about to hit the skids. It takes time to find these things out, and more time to become flexible enough to deal with most of them.
I first worked for a refer outfit and as such we would often deliver to Hunts Point in the Bronx. My first time there alone was a learning experience in just these things. I was told by a bully security guard that MY truck made one too many in their overnight area (I had no idea that he was messing with me) and I would have to find another spot. I ended up with a log violation (company not official) and spending the night at a TS in Connecticut. I was told the next day, when I delivered, that he was full of crap. But how was I to know, really, having never been there before?
Please keep us updated on your training. As you have noticed, we will gladly support you and answer your questions, but we also will let you have it ... if you have it coming.
I don't know Injun, but I can tell you that everything she's said is on the money. This is the way it is. Like it or not we can deal with some really nasty folks in this profession. A thick skin is simply the first defense. The second is observation and understanding that takes years of experience to cultivate. You'll get there if you persist. Be forthright and honest ... and know where your line is. If it's not for you, recognize that, accept it and do something else. If it's truly your dream to be an experienced and valuable driver ... stick to it, learn to roll with or duck the punches that WILL come and you'll be fine.
Remember, you're trying to join the ranks of the last Road Warriors in America. We're glad you want to join us, but you ... like every warrior ... need to be prepared for the realities of the industry you're in.
Good luck.PlumFCrazy, Tapeworm, Injun and 3 others Thank this. -
On another note I will say this.....She has got to learn to TAKE before she can give! She has only been out here for a few weeks.....and thinking she knows what her Mentor dont know....to me thats a problem she needs to get over real quick! When you get time under your belt is when she can teach!inkeper, Injun, fr8monkey and 1 other person Thank this. -
What new something did you learn today?
Yesterday?
The day before?
And, it is a serious question.
I see so many post that same response, basically word for word.
So, I'd like to know the new stuff you have learned over the past 3 days. -
Moose it's a philosophy. you learn, and you relearn. you never stop honing your skills. If nothing else you can learn the driving habits of the people around you if your eyes are open.
It's about always watching, always waiting to see what will happen, and not being so comfortable that you wind up in trouble.inkeper, DenaliDad and PlumFCrazy Thank this. -
