I walked away from two loads on consecutive days because neither broker would put our detention agreement on a revised rate con. Don't let them steal from you. Get it all in writing and bill them accordingly and never be afraid to cancel the load even if you're at the shipper and they want to load you. Same goes on the receiving end as well. Leave with the commodity. Go away from their property and find a place to park. Call around to find a place to off load you and store it. Bill every single thing imaginable to whomever you have an agreement with.

Had to consider this last week with a Werner load...

Broker caved in quick to 4hrs @ $50/HR.

Decided to make concession from $100/HR, since it was a light, easy, well paying miles. But I will NOT give free time. Hell No!!

I had a shipper pay me cash to stay and get loaded in NY last week after I told him I was leaving. Broker absolutely refused to put the detention rate on the confirmation so I decided I was cancelling the whole thing. The broker wanted them to sign for in/out times etc etc. I disagreed. Told him to put our agreed rate of $60 on the revised rate con and I would put the total hours to be billed on the confirmation when I left the property and on my invoice. He went crazy! These scumbags really freak out when we handle it so WE'RE covered and not them. I love turning the tables because from the beginning everything is stacked for the broker instead of the Carrier.

Good. It makes me think that I am too weak and shy... I am too much preoccupied by getting the rate itself especially when the rate is juicy and I am afraid that the deal will be off the table when I start demanding accesorial revisions in addition to that.

Maybe. 'He went crazy' doesn't sound like DSK is going to get another load on that account unless someone is desperate. I read this post and it sounds like he was willing to make a broker look bad with a customer to avoid losing 60 bucks. I certainly wouldn't use him again after that. I probably would have put it on the rate con to make him shut up about it... But it's a pretty bad look for DSK I'm afraid.

I guess there is a fine and delicate line especially when hoping to get more loads from the same broker. I guess, if the rate is not too good, and knowing the load is going to customers with bad reputation, it can be leveraged with more than standard accessorials such as $150 TONU/250 layover or $40-50 after 2 hours detention with maximum 250 per day. Quite frankly, I would consider fair $100 an hour detention (first 1 hour free) no cap on it either, and $700 layover per day. It would make them more responsible when wasting your time.Lately, I had to fly over home to rent a truck (since there was nothing available in the area) due to my break down to deliver the load to a customer. The whole recovery mission cost me over 2k on a load that paid 3K (750 miles) but what bugged me to the point of going mad and frenzy is that despite all my effort, they kept me there for 6 hours with impunity because they did not like the seal number written on BOL by hand. WTF!

The Landstar broker in question on that particular load claimed the shipper was not his customer so you're wrong. The rate conformation is a contract. Do you think I'm going to trust some sleazeball to pay me when it's not in writing? Why avoid putting it in writing at all unless your intentions are of an ill nature. If he was going to do the right thing the issue never would have arisen. Also, when I told him I wanted detention he suggested I leave the load before I even mentioned cancelling. Maybe ask me before assuming in the future.

Regardless, I could care less about if the broker uses me again or not. It's clear none of the ones I've run into on the boards care either. I'm here to make money. Giving away my services for free goes completely against that premise. Seems like the broker wants every the Carrier to eat all the inefficient processes the shipper and/or receiver have but they never want to give out a share of THEIR piece to share the burden. Instead, they expect the Carrier to give. Stick to your guns, Joe. If you give them an inch they will take you a mile. I'm very flexible when I negotiate my detention rates but it's never free. Period.

That's exactly the type of crap I'm talking about. They expect it for free. No way.

I inquired about filing on a broker's bond last month for slow / non payment. Starting the claim process would extend the broker's time to pay by 30 days. And then the bond company required me to sue and get a judgment before they would pay out.

IMO, if this is the new normal, then surety bonds are now worthless.
