I really don't see why you have to do all that here is what i think you can do get another lined up and call them and say hey i need to take a leave of absence for 3 weeks for whatever reason or tell them it's personal and they will route to a terminal to drop the truck and then go home start your new job and after 3 weeks you don't go back to work it will be voluntary quit and you will be eligible to rehire that's how i quit company because when you give notice they will start looking for what you have done so they can screw you up with your next job, i quit werner like that nice and slow and im eligible to rehire but i will never ever go there

You should at least find out where they want you to return the truck. I know my company has terminals in multiple states but if you don't return the truck to the same terminal you picked it up from, they consider that abandonment. It's next to impossible to get another job in trucking if you abandon equipment.

I assume this company gave you a policy handbook.Better read that first. They will charge you for the fuel used.Maybe not give you a final check. If they use dac plan on them putting things on it.When you apply to other companies they'll probably give the employer bad reccomendations. In the long run the cons outweighs the pros.If this company is that bad to work for and just wanna get home and be done with them,is what you can do is lie to them and tell them you have a sickness in the family and have to get home ASAP.Don't tell the truth, that's unheard of in trucking, lol.

You probably signed an agreement stating that if you don't turn your truck in at a terminal they'll charge you fees to go get it. If you leave a truck somewhere you'll be sorry. Look at it from their perspective. They gave you the truck and loads, paid you, so if you don't like it, fine, that's life. Just don't make it worse by leaving the truck somewhere they have to pay somebody to go get it. That will absolutely follow you on your DAC, and it'll be all bad. Just show some respect, do it right, say goodbye. I did it that way, it was easy and cool. I gave no notice because of our "at will" agreement...works both ways. I figure if the company can just let me go, I have no requirement to give them any more notice than they would give me.

How long have you been with the company? If it's close to 6 months to a year, there are better companies you can find, but I'm sure you know that. I think it would be smartest to find that job before you quit though. You don't want the next companies you apply to think you're just another first year that can't hack it, right?

The long leave of absence idea for getting your truck turned in sounds pretty good, but if you want out of your company that bad, just be prepared to pay for a bus ticket. It won't be the end of the world, lol. I've also heard that the company may be legally responsible for getting you home, but I'm not actually sure.

I plan to bring it to the closest terminal and give someone keys.

Get most of your stuff out of the truck. I'd find some way to go to the home terminal without a load, and then walk in and quit. You don't owe them notice, but you do need to turn the truck in where they want, or where you hired on at, Most companies will screw you somehow, or try to.
Use the rules they have set up against them. You may also want to cash in or use any accrued vacation time, and also juggle your paperwork so you have most of what they owed you paid before you get out of the truck.

many ways to do this...but it depends on your company, traffic, etc.

Because of the problems working for a company where your home terminal is hours away, I don't even take a job anymore that is more than a few hours away from home, or one I have to take the truck home.

I have been through too many BS problems with crappy companies over the years. I know my car is sitting at the terminal, and i'd rather drive home an hour or two once a month, with my truck in the shop getting serviced or repaired, than the other options.

One company I worked for for 5 years was steadily going down hill, but I was promised to go on a special dedicated fleet that was much better. They kept delaying it, while my pay dropped, and working conditions sucked.
I cashed in my vacation, took my accrued time off, which left me a few days to get to the 'home terminal' 9 hours away, and requested my next load after time off to head in that direction.
I had another job lined up in that city.

Before I got my load to the area I had to turn the truck in at, the qccomm beeped, and magically, I was assigned to the dedicated fleet. I was happy, it was a better job, but I had stripped out my truck and had 3 changes of clothes and a sleeping bag with me. :)

Don't quit under a load or dispatch unless you have some way to document they ok'd it, leave the truck clean, turn in all your fuel cards and whatever they require you to turn in....and even though they are jerks, you walk away with a little dignity.

The company is werner. Allentown is closest terminal, where I did orientation, and got pick up by my trainer. But not where the truck was assigned to me. I really don't know how to get sent there that's why I thought I'd just drive there over night w/out load and give notice and had over my keys. I feel pretty confident if I give notice I'll be run around and put in bad situations.

Won't they want documentation of the issue?
