Here's a little something for the new folks to think about. A week ago I got a satellite message from dispatch to call my wife ASAP. Now this is not anything like usual, we keep in touch several times a day via cell phone but there are stretches of road where cell coverage is real spotty.
Now Barb has not been feeling very good from way back in the spring, tired all the time, not sleeping well, aches all over. Been seeing chiropractor for spine probs. Has not been a good year for her.... or me.
Anyhow, I call and she tells me that the results of her blood test came back and the Doc is telling her to get to the hospital immediately!!! Her hemoglobin count is down to 6 and it should be 12. Hemoglobin is the red cells in her blood that carry oxygen to all of her body. At 6 she is in great danger of stroke or heart attack, etc.
I'm still 400 miles away with about an hour left to drive. Barb has cataracts and it's difficult for her to drive but there's no-one around to drive her. Says she's gonna wait till I get home the next day. I try to sound calm but I'm freaking out big time. But she talks me into staying legal e-log instead of just hammering home and screw legal. We can't afford me getting fired.
Couple hours later she calls and says she's at the hospital, drove herself. They gave her three pints of blood and kept her overnight. I think I might have slept for an hour that night and as soon as the 10 hours were up I had that old binder screaming for home.
Everything turned out ok. Alot of her pains disappeared and she feels much better. We're going Monday to see about her cataract surgery.
But guys, being "out there" when your loved ones are in trouble is something truckers know all too well. I've seldom felt more helpless and afraid.
Think about this before you move into this trade.
Something to Consider.

Scary story there Kittyfoot. Glad she's doing good now!
I was on the other side of that back in June. My hubby had strained his shoulder one day cranking down the landing gear on the trailer. Didn't think too much about it until a few days later when he got hauled out of a truck stop in southern Indiana in an ambulance with stroke like symptoms. I'm sitting up here in WI, freaking out. Lucky he was basically OK. Docs are still trying to figure out just what did happen. He is still not able to drive. He did not have a stroke at least.Kittyfoot Thanks this. -
#### Kittyfoot....that is a harsh story my friend.........I'm glad she is ok and that she was able to get herself to the hospital...that has always been one of my biggest fears when I was out there....that something would happen and there was no way for me to help....god bless driver
SweetSouthernRide and Kittyfoot Thank this. -
Sounds like a "just in the nick of time" thing. Glad things worked out well. Tell her Oldnewbie says "Hey" and that she'll be on my list of folks I pray for.
Kittyfoot, SweetSouthernRide and rocknroll nik Thank this. -
Oldnewbie, I told her and she says with all her health probs she can use every prayer she can get.
Kik, thanks to you too. It's been hard all year with her feeling so bad. She has a beautiful smile that lights up my heart but I didn't get to see that much this year.
Lilbit, has he seen a good chiropractor? Alot of the muscle/nerves are attatched to the spine and can pull it out of shape.... which affects other nerves, etc that travel thru the spinal column.rocknroll nik Thanks this. -
There may be some nerve damage in the shoulder itself. Possibly a stretched nerve. Once the EMG is done, we should have a better idea of what is going on. He's never had any of the problems he is now having before, which is driving him nuts! Headaches, along with about 50% loss of the strength in his left arm. The slightest thing can set off the headaches. I think there will be something showing up with the EMG.
The general practitioner wasn't looking at the right things, so after the MRI on his neck and shoulder, he requested to go to my spine specialist. My spine guy is an osteopath, and has at least figured out what causes my back problems, which none of the other docs I have seen in the last 5 years had been able to figure out. -
yeah what she said...I'm the other half of the dynamic duo......guess you didn't know ...probably one of the few on the forum that didn't -
If this was a true story then you need to reevaluate your relationship and what is important in your life, should your wife had stayed with the mutual decision of wanting to go to the hospital , she would be dead and it would be your fault for agreeing for her to wait on getting emergency treatment.
I really hope this was a story for the purpose obtaining a of reaction.
This was not an industry problem this was a lack of judgement on your part, Can not blame truck for your lack of concern. -
PJ a little harsh don't you think....it's obvious to me that it IS a true story and that he is mortified by what happened and it was only at his wifes INSISTENCE that he not jeopordize his job...not everyone out there is in a position to be flippant about their employment.....He was not blaming trucking he was letting NEW drivers know that these things happen for crying out loud, and that as drivers there isn't anything you can do about it sometimes that's all
Texas-Nana, SweetSouthernRide, tinytim and 5 others Thank this. -
I'm so glad she's better and I'll keep her in my prayers.
rocknroll nik and SweetSouthernRide Thank this.
