I was talking to a shade tree mechanic friend yesterday at the local parts house.. He has helped me through the years, has a reputation for getting a driver out of a bind and rolling again. A real redneck, but likable fella.
He has an older F350 ford pick-up with dual wheels and a tool body on it.
Several days ago he had a driver put a fan through the radiator about 65 or 70 miles from his shop. They put a gas-driven air compressor in the pick-up,hooked the air line into the disabled trucks air tanks for brakes, used a long chain and a piece of pipe, and pulled the truck & trailer the 65 / 70 miles back to the shop. Took them about 2 hours, he said. The driver did not have the cash for a wrecker, so they came up with this plan.
Now imagine that picture. A large pick-uppulling a FLD 120 and a logging trailer down the interstate to the first exit, then another 60 miles or so on 2 lane country roads.
Do you have any idea what a DOT officer would have done if he had seen that,:smt021 I asked. He just grinned and said " No, we just decided to do it".
There are 2 types of people in this world. Those who get caught, and those who don't.![]()
Sometimes you just wonder

I would say that differently,,
theres two kinds of people in this world..
Those who talk and those who gets it done...Vilhiem, mickimause, yotaman and 10 others Thank this. -
I have pulled trucks several miles to the shop with a tractor, my dad even used his then new 1976 Chrysler 4 door car to pull a bob-tail about 2 miles to a shop once. But 60+ miles, tractor and trailer, at road speeds is asking for trouble. -
I saw a little farm tractor pulling a 12' wide mobile home on a narrow 2 lane highway in Kentucky.
Those country boys know how to get the job done. -
I won't get in the safe or smart debate as I'm on the fence. I have been painted in that corner with no way out. But I will say I'm bad to fix whatever right where she quits. Only I have a 4900 IH with a tool bed, welder, compressor and 6000 lbs auto crane.
Not trying to out do the story here but years ago my oldest brother lost an engine in gallop New Mexico. Called home I loaded the spare in my truck I was using at the time and we put it in right on the side where it quit. We were poor then and had no better sense. Course we are still poor281ric, Ezrider_48501, mrbamcclain and 5 others Thank this. -
Like JR. says, A country boy can survive.

I've swapped two transmissions in a car on side of road, cheaper then towing it.. But I give the guys credit helping the trucker out.. Most people wouldn't do this towing for themselves, these guys did it for a stranger.. Not the safest thing to do but I give them credit none the less....
RERM Thanks this. -
When you run junk like we used to you kept spare everything. If you updated it was to a nicer version of what you had and kept your old rig for parts. To finish that story he caught a ride back to the truck from the truck stop with a driver and stayed in the truck while I came from Arkansas in a 80 model Chevrolet C60 gas burner with a 5 speed trans and 2 speed rear. He had most of it loose that he could with the tools he carries. About daylight we already heard it run and was getting ready to put the hood back on when a New Mexico trooper finally stopped and said hey you boys can't put that engine in on the side of my highway. All's big brother said was yes sir we will get a tow truck coming. In the 2 days he waited on me drivers is all that stopped to check on him. FWIW I think I was 19 or 20 at the time and my old gas burner mechanics truck was 15 years old or so. We were just dumb hillbillies that had a knot in our side to go trucking
comallard, The Admiral and SL3406 Thank this.
