He may or may not be able to get back home every weekend. Some carriers are better than others at helping owner operators and drivers get back home. I would encourage him to find a carrier that pays percentage and has good rates. Most carriers who pay percentage are non forced dispatch. You can go home any time you wish, since you are paying for the fuel and the carrier is not out any money as they would running mileage. When you run for a carrier that pays mileage, most pay for ALL miles so that is not as much of an option. Depending on where your son lives, it may be easier or more difficult for him to get home every week. He may consider getting his own authority. Having your own authority means that you pay all the bills and are totally responsible for finding your own loads, collecting the money and being responsible for all compliance. There are some good carriers that your son could lease his truck where he can find pretty much what he wants. Buying a truck won't guarantee that you will make more money, but it will give you the opportunity to do better than being a company driver.

    Thanks One Shot,
He's leaving options open...of course chitown even without mortgage it's min. $5,000. a yr. for prop, tax alone. 675 after 10 yrs. driving ,its
time to move on . I have a few buddys that have been in the buss. and own 4-5 trucks and actually do real well...If he could clear $1,000-$1,500 to start out he'd be happy.

    Thanks G/Man,
Great post and the main word that catches his eye is opportunity..to do better. I'd like to advise him since I've been driving 35 yrs. but local compared to O.T.R. or O/O is a whole different world and all the info. I receive is very helpful. I understand as in all trades that some guys ain't happy and you can't always base you decisions on all the posts I read.
    Thank you again

You have 35 years experience and think the answer to his problem is buying his own truck?:smt009 The problem is the company he is with. You can make $17-$18 an hour at most local jobs. That's $720 just for 40 hours. Most places run drivers 50-60 hours a week and pay overtime after 40 so you do the math. Home each night and no O/O and truck BS to worry about. Tell him to look for a better job.

    Thanks DriverToBroker,
Never told him the answer is to buy his own truck, just told him jobs like mine are getting hard to come by. $28.50 hr. $43.00 hr. on the O.T. CO. pays in to my Ins. and pension and we avg. 20-30 hrs. of O.T. a week and home every night and I have 7 wks. vaca. good luck finding that. His job pays $21. and lucky to get 40 hrs. and after 10 yrs. been looking at union and non union jobs there all the same $16 to $22. So he's keeping an open mind doing some research. Have friends of mine in the buss. and have small fleets and actually doing well. Thanks for the help brother..be safe.

    drivertobroker,
Sysco Chicago..but you''ll have to push a 2 wheeler up and down stairs with 10 tons a day..not an easy job...inner city ...side streets ..alleys .greasy stairs no one shovels and 12-14 days..I've been driving doubles but that took 30 yrs. seniority.....come on by always looking for drivers

Looks good to give it a shot and might have bro in law run with him for a while to keep wheels moving.Been talking to a few family and friends that have small fleets and are brokers and some acct. and tax guys. He's done a ton of research. Will have a very small payment that will help a lot..and if it doesn't fly what the hell he can always work for someone else again..there's a ton of those jobs.
    Take care and good luck
