Hello, I have been on and off this board reading for a couple years and have
been getting alot of good and the bad. Only reason that I haven't jumped
into a truck job was because I was reading alot of downsides and they were
outweighing the goods. But now I am poised to once again make the change
from retail management to truck driver. I did a lot of traveling on the road
as a field supervisor for Wal Mart and I really like a traveling jobs. If you
would be so kind to answer a few questions for me. Please tell me no one on
here is currently bringing home $10 paychecks for hundreds of hours of driving. How do you guys plan a trip to where you get to the destination
on time while observing the HOS rules? This confuses me. Do you have to stop at every single weight station? Will companys frown upon you if you use
your own truck gps (ala CoPilot11)? I live in Georgia, if I get my CDL permit
before I attend the training school will the school accept it thus clearing one hurdle for me? What is the trick that pros use to back a rig perfectly
on the first try? One last question. Where is the crapper located in a sleeper cab? Sorry about all the questions as I am in contact with Driver
Solutions for CDL Training and will be setting up a training date for either
the 21st or 28th of December. Still a little nervous. I don't won't to mess up and get dropped or anything. Been going through the E-Gears courses
to kinda prepare. Recruiter says I will be training for PAM and I hope all is
well there compensation and managerial wise. I have also applied with Truckers Dispatch. Anybody here ever delt with them can share a few words? I am still somewhat nervous about this career move. I haven't
submitted my resignation letter yet to my employer but I am going to go
ahead and do it. Really hope to join you guys on the road soon.
Soon to be rookie with questions.

Dude, judging from your post you should probably stay at wally world.
Where is the crapper. come on are you serious ? -
This guy has go to be joking! A crapper in a truck? Really? Like Wild Bill said stay at Wal-Mart man you have no business behind the wheel of a 40K lbs piece of equipment.
-
First off there is no crapper in a truck, just a bed and some shelves, thats what the truckstops and restareas are for. Now when you go through schooling hopefully its a decent one and they show you how to trip plan so you know when you will get there and if you can do it legally. No companies dont care if you use gps, but remember its only a tool and that gps will try and send you down roads that trucks cannot be on and it will get you in big trouble if you dont use your head, and you randy mcnally truck atlas along with directions from company and the place you're going to. Trucking isnt like a traveling job, you are in a big truck that cant go everywhere a car can and you have to follow alot of rules and laws, not just government laws but laws and rules of the road.

2nd? I'll leave the trip planning Question to someone with more experiance then me to answer
3rd? Yes you have to stop at all "open" weigh stations, unless you have Prepass but even then you can still be called in if your close to the limit
4th? No if anything a company would like that you use a GPS so that you dont have to take your eyes off the road to look at a map or notebook. And with a GPS your less likely to get lost and waste there fuel.
5th? if you get your permit before you go to school thats just one less thing to worry about once your in
6th? I'll leave backing advice to more experianced drivers
7th? There isnt a "crapper" in a Sleeper, however if you were to buy your own truck at somepoint you could put an after market Sleeper/Condo from like ARI or something and they have bathroom options
And as the other guys have said you dont really sound like your fit for driving, but if its really what you want to do, go for it! only you will know if you can handle it. Tho I would recommend that you go to a truck stop and talk to some drivers and check out there trucks before you pay for school -
I'm confused. You said you've been reading posts on here for a couple of years. There are numerous posts about and even photos of tractors both day cab and sleeper. There are also threads dealing with bathroom issues as well as all the other issues you mentioned.
I would suggest that you use the search feature and look for those threads. Also search the new driver forums and the experienced driver forums. I'm sure you'll find the answers you're looking for. -

As far as backing it up perfectly that just comes in time, after doing it several times every day you will eventually get the hang of it and get your own routine to backing. They will also give you tips and show you how to back up. But even the experienced hands on here have trouble backing into some of these docks, and dont lie cause ive seen some hairy spots that took me a half hour to hit the hole it was so tight and obstacles in the way. An for the weigh stations im pretty sure P.A.M. has prepass so depending on the scale you may get to bypass it or you might get pulled into to weigh. Sometimes they just pull you around back to check your logs and paperwork.

Thanks guys. I was just kidding about the crapper question. I would stay at
Wally World if i wasn't so burned out on retail. Been doing it over 15 years.
I'm sure everybody here started in a different career before trucking. I,m
no different. I say a couple of years reading this board because the last
time I applied for a truck job I could have been driving for Swift. I was set
to go to training when I got the call from Wal Mart homeoffice to work out
on the road as a field manager for Store Planning. That was a few years ago.
Before I changed my mind I was on this very board reading every post that
was related to Swift or just trucking in general. I am greatful for any advice given. -
If you are at walley and been there for 15 then STAY THERE! You are making better money than any of the nubies out there WITH benefits! I know I did several months at 2012 and know about what you are making! If you're that bored transfer to the deli or shop or garden or something but don't quit down a good freaking job to come into this cesspool called trucking! If you do, you HAVE to be stupid! Geeze Louise sleep in your own bed every night and put up with the idiots at Walley world! I looked at my short time there as relaxiation and therapy! I worked the 97 and 86 wall! Nothing to do but hang meat and watch women and people who dont know how to dress in public!
But don't give up your day job to become a comic as that 1st post was a total flop!
