Soooo. 14hp Kohler vs 13hp Honda Pony Motors. opinions??

    Pressure is determined by resistance to fluid flow. In simple terms, the heavier the load, the higher the pressure needed to move said load. As long as the pressure rating on all the hydraulic components is higher than what is needed to move the load, it will move.

    Flow determines the speed at which the hydraulics operate. Think of it like filling a bucket with water. It will fill faster with the tap wide open than with it only half open.

    HP is the ability to do work. HP needs to be matched to the flow rate of the pump.

    I was thinking of creating an enclosure for the motor. i do believe keeping it clean and free of road salt/debris. The first thought was actually creating a bag for the unit. I kinda though someone would see it and steel it. (You know how people are) But, the bag would be an easy start to help protect the unit til I figure out how to create an enclosure for the unit.

    Re: PTO, I have heard that sometimes the drive shafts break. That to me is worse. If that happens, then you need a truck with a pto to move it. if your truck goes down, you can still move the trailer with another truck.

    So, an 18HP Pony motor with 3000psi and 7gpm is pretty good??? (Briggs/Straton V-Twin)
    compared to a 13HP 3000psi 4.75 gpm. (Honda)

    First one is also heavier and more costly and might not fit within the neck due to size.

    Then get a pump that mounts directly to the pto and voila no driveshafts to break

    I was just gonna say that. Nice and compact. Less chance for #### to break.

    I haven't toyed with pony motors but both should be able to handle the same amount of weight/force. The bigger one should be faster since it can pump more fluid.

    Any pics of a small unit like what you are talking about. Mfg Name, cost, place to purchase?? I'd like to investigate.

    We used those setups on our hydrovac trucks. I think we used Chelsea PTO's but I can't remember what brand pumps we used. They were just fixed displacement gear pumps. 3-8 GPM depending on what application we needed them for.

    I have had rgn with pups and now I use a pto set up. The pto is better in every aspect so far. I Would never go back to a pup. The pump in the pic is a small Muncie pump but you can pretty much mount any pump there. I use the larger Muncie pumps. 5500 psi max 27 gpm
