Thanks to everyone. After this trip I have a few more questions.

    1. Is it more difficult if you are hauling? empty trailer, tanker (big liquid filled tank),big stuff strapped to open trailer, or anything in a closed trailer?

    2. I only seen 3 trucks that had a flat front, no hood or anything. Why are there not more? I only could think off not very aero dynamic and or uses more fuel.

    3. Are cbs still the main way truckers comminucate?

    4. How do truckers get paid, hourly or distance you drive?

    5. Is it true that truckers can only drive for so many hours than have to stop for a rest?

Thanks again. Sometimes things just make me wonder.

Empty's are no work at all except for the equipment itself. COE (cab over engine) are very seldom used anymore because of fuel savings like you said and the conventionals ride alot better too. They were designed way back when so the truck could haul the longer trailers when they had the 55 foot law. CB's are still used but you'll find more and more drivers turning them way down because of all the junk you here on them. But they are a good safety item when you need them.

I think the lucky drivers get paid by the hour. However, most are paid by the mile. The companies would go broke if they paid drivers for every hour they worked. Yes it's true that commerical drivers are limited to how many hours in a day and in a week. It's very strict and they are checked all the time. There are some that get around the law but it's getting harder everyday. It's just not worth it in my opinion.

Everything has it's own characteristics.... empty van trailers on a windy day can be a pain. Tanks have their own issues because the liquid wants to move around etc..

The ride is generally lousy as is the fuel economy... what GasHauler said.

To a degree, they're not as useful as they once were but still come in handy.

Very few get paid hourly. Most by miles but, the miles that the company calculates for the run. Usually not the actual miles driven. As for myself, I receive a percentage of the load.

Yes - We essentially have a 14 hour workday in which we can drive 11 hours, then we must take a 10 hour break. That's the short answer anyway.

    yer welcome.

    1. Is it more difficult if you are hauling? empty trailer, tanker (big liquid filled tank),big stuff strapped to open trailer, or anything in a closed trailer?

It gets harder depending on weather, and the size of load as well as the weight(when going downhill) just to keep to the speed limits.

    2. I only seen 3 trucks that had a flat front, no hood or anything. Why are there not more? I only could think off not very aero dynamic and or uses more fuel.

I cant answer for americans, but in aus, they are used all the time, as they give us tighter turning circles, and can haul longer trailers.

    3. Are cbs still the main way truckers comminucate?
Only when needed, as well as UHF's; and some even use skype.

    4. How do truckers get paid, hourly or distance you drive?
I get paid per job(by km's) (That is altered depending on type weight, and urgency)

    5. Is it true that truckers can only drive for so many hours than have to stop for a rest?
True, if I stay under 100km of my depot, I dont have to worry about that rule, but on the most, it's
5H 30min (must have 15min break in it, so cant work longer then 5H 15min)
    and it goes on from there;
With 24hours, you must have 7 hour rest.
With 7days, you must have 24hours off the job.

Thats just the ball-park over here.

    4. How do truckers get paid, hourly or distance you drive?
I get paid by the load, with extras like lumpers threw in on top of the original fee.
I would never drive by the mile for anyone because that is a suckers game in my opinion.
    5. Is it true that truckers can only drive for so many hours than have to stop for a rest?

legally yes,but you can throw the rules aside,& you drive as long as you can keep your peepers open-I do not suggest that

That is true, but the price of the load is calculated by the km's you have to do.. or miles in this case.
As I too get paid like that, but to break it down, I just say km, thats about 5.50 per Km, and if I need my A trailer, its 7.50 per km; and thats just regular freight, not over sized or anything.

And no, that extra $2 is nothing, compared to the expenses.
