I thought I found the near perfect working situation when I started driving back in September. I drive almost full-time and I was happy to add to my skill set as a driver. I was under the impression that I would be with this company for at least eight months or a year. Today, I found this is not the case. The part-time drivers are being laid-off at the end of the year. I'm going to have just over three months driving experience and I feel like that's worthless when applying for other local driving jobs.

We were invited to apply for other positions in the company, but there aren't many to choose from which don't put me right back in the same situation. Permanent full-timers rarely leave.

I don't qualify for unemployment because I still have a toe in my former career. I work from ten to twenty hours a week and there's no way I can get more hours. Several coworkers have already faced furloughs this year.

Obviously, ninety days isn't going to get me anywhere with Groendyke or Cast. I can run tanker, doubles and I have my hazmat. My safety record is still good. I still can't go OTR due to the Mom situation, otherwise I'd be back knocking on System's door. I'm not excited about fracking or taking on food service driving in Denver. Are there any other options I could look into? I'm not against regional, but I'd like to stay local-ish for the time being.

WOW! that isn't good, I would certainly find ya something! I am sure there are companies that will take you with the 3 months that you have, It being clean and clear, I would certainly go for it. I wish you luck, I've been through the sick mom thing and had to come home. Good Luck!

Sorry to hear about this CJ. Idk what CO has for can work but that may be an option for you. Some intermodal companies like TSL can get you home every night and they don't pay to horribly. Usually you don't have to have a whole lot of experience either. If you've got a clean MVR sometimes they will make an exception as well. Sorry to hear about the lay off that really sucks but don't give up. It wouldn't hurt to throw in applications for local jobs you don't necessarily qualify for either. Hey the worst thing they can say is no. But you don't know if they'll give you a shot if you don't try. and if its local work they can't say much about insurance. They all insure under 1 year drivers if its less than 100 air miles...even them sneak jerks at great west will insure a rookie if its under 100 air miles.

having an advanced notice is not always common. I remember finding out after showing up for work one day 5 days before turkey day, that us 5 drivers had no more loads on our dedicated run. you are lucky to get that much of of notice in advance, have some time to plan. I know it may not make you feel better, I wish you the best.

So sorry to hear this bad news C Jade. I share your (temporary) pain and can relate, as I was laid off about 3 weeks ago.
Keep your head up and keep looking forward! There's already some good suggestions re. intermodal.
Also scout out all the LTL's in your area. Some may be small and fly under the normal name-recognition radar.

It's just a temporary setback and this may be for a better reason, yet to be seen.

I know you can search Google & other venues, but a quick search on Google Maps comes up with these LTLs.
You can do the same with intermodal and other areas of drayage/trucking. At least these keep you local.

Sorry to hear about your situation OP, but the bright side of the coin is they gave you plenty of notice and they should also be in position to give you a recommendation.

Doing searches on Google Maps is an invaluable method. I've used it for market research, finding Walmarts or customers, motels, etc.
