Try the LTL folks you may be able to get on doing some part time dock work to start with til a driving spot comes available. Also try the beverage/beer companies , you'll be doing some rather hard physical work but still get decent pay and be home nights.

I have a lot of respect for my DM because of this. He told us right when he knew as opposed to keeping it a secret until the final week of the year.

HR Departments warn supervisors NOT to reveal this info to employees. This happened during my last layoff. We all thought we had jobs until we showed up to stacks of empty boxes and severance paperwork. Security guards were hired just to show us out the door and make sure we left. I think that is a crap policy. "Oh, well we can't tell people because they'll apply somewhere else." NO! REALLY?! What do you think they're going to do when they're laid off? So selfish and small minded. Since most companies know they're cutting employees well in advance of actually doing so, it ought to be illegal not to give people at least 90 days notice. At least then people would know to get their resumes out and hold off on buying a new house or having another kid.

I agree! In fact, I don't know the specific number, but companies with over X? number of employees that have mass (%)? layoffs, are required by law to give the employee ample notice, prior to the layoff.

It's admirable of your DM to actually be a considerate human being, and not succumb to the "general rule" of not telling you until last minute.
Offhand, I would think SAIA would be a good LTL to try to get hooked up with. They are strong, nationwide.

They are giving advance notice hoping you will quit. You can always apply for unmployment especially if you are laid off. They want you to quit so they don't have to pay the unemployment. Best of luck to you...at least you have three months, that's a lot better than no months.

You must have missed the part where CrimineyJade (the OP) said she didn't qualify for unemployment because she is still working part-time in her former job.

Not sure what your whereabouts are in Denver but I know that Central Transport is hiring right this second in Commerce City, you can get in with 3 mos exp. HVH seems to always constantly be starving for city drivers, again little to no exp. I see a new HVH driver looking lost at the businesses I p&d all the time. The company I drive for will hire with 0 exp, it's an LTL job home every night, I know numerous other companies but to be honest it's slow season for LTL freight. But being with my current company I know of literally 50 local driving jobs that I've been introduced to through P&D in my route which covers anywhere from Park Hill, Old Stapleton, to Montbello to D.I.A. and over 400 docks. Bottom line is if you fill out enough apps and have your mvr ready, turn them in to enough dispatchers and terminal managers you WILL get hired on with someone who needs a seat filled. It happens. Let me know if you're interested I can give you a looooong list of carriers.

Here's a list I made of docks that my P&D route covers that have day cab tractors in their yard. They are nice places and most are very friendly. And that's just a fraction of businesses I service. You can land a job if you are persistent enough. Happy Hunting
