Your best bet is to find the guy you're replacing and ask him why he left. Job security is a concern here- although job security at the moment anywhere in trucking is not a safe bet. Sounds like you might be spending your day in the Railyard, they can waste your whole day doing nothing- then you have to run a load to a customer before he closes, or to find out you missed an appointment. If you leave at 04:00 and come home at 18:30 it's not worth it.
If you like independence and the freedom of NOT working for a Mega- Carrier it could be nice.
Sound like a good job?

Turned out the job I was supposed to get got filled already. So now I am being hired for my friends company. I was told I would make 7 to 800 a week and they start at 730 AM and go till 730 PM. To me this sounds like a worse job than the other. I am working for a company though so perhaps I would get benefits and everything.
However my concern still would be this wouldn't count as OTR time. Or do most companies just want you driving a truck for experience? -
There are ups and downs to any job out there. If you believe it is right for you then go ahead and give er a shot. I can tell you one thing about driving for an O/O, there are no sick days or days off. I drove for an O/O hauling sand and got paid 26% of every load. The thing about it was that there were no other drivers to fill in or take over if I wasn't there so being sick or taking a day was never an option. If that O/O has a truck down for a day he is going to lose a lot of money and won't be a happy camper. If this is something that maybe a problem for you then you might want to discuss this upfront.
Overall it doesn't sound like a bad deal. Like I said though, just be clear of all the details before committing.

So the new job is hauling containers out of the rail yards. I had never heard of such a thing until I was told about it.
-
Sounds like a local job. (which will not count as otr time) Sounds pretty iffy to me. especially if the are paying by the mile
-
Yea, those weird looking container trailers, you see them in port cities a lot, some are really funny looking.
But try it, if it doesnt work, you can always head over to a larger OTR carrier. Try it out, can always quit if it turns out its no good. -
That's why I am thinking an OTR company is the way to go then come back to a local company after I have gotten the required experience to apply for them.
-
Well you could try the local job for a week or 2 and see. Whats a couple of weeks choosing a possible career?

Hauling containers sucks. Here in canada it was always a big rush to load, unload and bring the container back. I only had to do it a couple times and hated it. I miss local work but I don't miss being stuck in traffic lol. I'm going to guess its paid by the amount of containers you do in a day?

Containers and rail is called intermodal, There are a lot of big companys that have a regional div for this kind of work. Schiender, jb hunt, swift to name a few
