Transnet manages 8 container ports along South Africa's coast.
Rampant corruption and theft is the main problem followed by aging equipment.

Transnet’s container ports, mostly situated in Durban and Cape Town, are rated among the world’s worst in terms of efficiency, featuring in the bottom 10 of 348 ports ranked by the World Bank’s in its latest container port performance index.

Typical African tribal influence. Yes, apartheid was wrong, but the economy was more stable then. Now, the chiefs take it all and the masses still have nothing.

Same with the submarine fleet they had. Ended up tied up to the piers rusting away. They have 3 now and I think they're battery powered. Upkeep of submarines takes a phenomenal amount of money and a country like South Africa can't afford that.

You could not ruin a country and its infrastructure faster if you were trying your utmost.
When I started driving as an owner operator in 1988 I drove an old F series Mack and Fruehauf lowboy.
I did some work for the South African electrical parastatal Eskom.
They had their own large fleet of way fresher equipment to move transformers and such equipment than I had but they used me in emergencies.
Usually in the dead of night or on weekends when their crews were not on duty so it was easier to call the hungry for business owner operator.
Most emergencies were due to sabotage by the armed wing of Nelson Mandela's ANC political party that was still a banned organisation.
This was back in the days of apartheid, so a war was being waged against infrastructure.
It helped me a lot this war on infrastructure.
It however hardly made a scratch and went largely unfelt by the general population.
They blew up a transformer and it would be replaced with in 24 hours anywhere in the country and very seldom was it that they could not reroute surplus power into the affected grid from another point.
So when the ANC was tasked with bringing down the electrical grid, they proved hugely ineffectual.
There was still over sufficient stable cheap power available.
So much so that it was exported so cheaply to neighbouring countries who built aluminium smelters to process bauxite that they imported into aluminium.

Fast forward not even 10 years ant this same ANC political party that could not make a dent in the electricity supply when destruction thereof was their job is handed the keys to the kingdom.
They are now given 100% control of one of the biggest electricity utilities in the world.
A world class electricity producer and distributor with state-of-the-art reliable stations.
20 years and 100 billion dollars later they cannot keep the lights on.
The staff compliment has more than doubled yet they produce less electricity than before.
The infrastructure is almost all failing yet tens of billions of dollars have been spent.
This is what happens when socialists are put in charge.
    They just screw everything up.
That they are corrupt to the core does not help either.

So, to the article posted, it's the same thing just with Portnet , the harbour entity.
This too was handed these apathetic arrogant criminal communists called the ANC.
They have destroyed this too and now we have these backlogs.
