Unfortunately the OTR positions are not streamlined to ensure you are home for Guard time or training. If the requirements of the Guard is such that he needs to be home monthly, then maybe he needs to look into a local driving position. A local position would be better suited to have him available for his obligations to the Guard. Regardless of the companies respect or non-respect for the military and its service, it is designed to make a profit and move freight. I must agree with the previous poster, maybe he should look into a local line of work, or another occupation that allows for his Guard responsibilities.

So what's to stop all companies from having an excuse to why it's not convenient to hire reservists? Freedom isn't free and profit isn't the end all be all of human existance. They need to pony up and do there duty to this nation just like he is.
Guess this is what you can expect from a company that has a driver pass away working for him and isn't even concern about what happens with his body.drvrtech77 and SJArmyWife Thank this. -
I definately understand the sacrafice to serve this nation. But that is not a excuse for forgeting personal respinsibility. Knowing that you have monthly meetings and or training, it is your responsibility to be there. Why would you rely on a over the road company to get you to these drill dates. Why would you not ensure you are available by getting a local job, be it driving or anything else. He accdepted the responsibility by volenteering, now he is asking his employer to ensure he is back to fulfill these responsibilities.
Granted the government has passed laws that require your employer to allow you the time for these drills. Thereby attempting to relieve you of your responsibility and placing that responsibility on them that you are available. Why did he not take the precations necessary to ensure he was there to be present for these drills?Lonesome Thanks this. -
So your saying the company shouldn't be concerned about the defense of our nation. I call BS. It's that very thing that allows that company to exist and make money in the first place. I repeat the company should feel honored to have him as an employee and proud to accommodate his training schedule. It is his responsibility to inform the company when the training is in a timely manner and the companies responsibility to see that he is there on time and available. It's the law and the patriotic thing to do.
Now if you like I'll pass the shovel back to you so you can dig the hole a little deeper because you are dead wrong on this one.

Why is it the companies responsibility to ensure he is where he is supposed to be? Yes, the military has ensured a safe , secure, and free nation in which this company can do business. But, in no way is it obligated to ensure a military individual is available, making special considerations for him or her to be there. Although, the nanny state has ensured that the company take care of his personal responsibility. The company, nor anyone else, owes you anything because you are in the military. Although it is nice when they do provide special privledges to those who serve.
The, shovel (as you put it) is passed again. Although I dont feel we will agree. But like you I have my personal fellings on this matter. I respect your feelings, although I dont agree with them. -
Be careful, your fanatical ideology is showing. Yes, I believe the company does owe it to the military to have a reservist available for their reserve duties. It's part of being a good corporate citizen.

I agree to a point about this. It's OTR. Meaning over the road. I love the military and have the greatest respect for them and think they are shortchanged in a lot of ways. Before a guy gets in a truck with a company that really does run all 48 states (as SRT does), that driver needs to think about the other responsibilities he has outside of trucking. Plenty of companies do regional and are able to get one home for military/family obligations. A company like SRT isn't that company. Hell they can't get you or your stuff home if you die. Or they refuse to, anyway. Being in the National Gaurd is a noble thing and there is absolutely nothing wrong with having to fill out the requirements. But at the same time going straight up 48 state OTR while having those commitments isn't exactly being responsible.
-
Unfortunately, I disagree. No one owes anyone anything. When you take on the responsibility and join the military, you also take on the responsibility to ensure you meet all requirements. That does not mean that someone else should provide for you to be at a certain place and time just because you serve. When you accept employment, you must also consider your family and your military obligations. Ensuring that you will be available to perform those obligations, without expecting someone or something else to make you available. It is nice if the company will assist in getting to your drills, but why whould it be obligated to do so? After all it was him who accepted this obligation when he enlisted, not the company.
Since we are flogging a dead horse. I will step aside and allow you the last word. -
