I think you have a point about the speed differential, but even back in the old days before the interstate was built, the speed limit signs posted truck speeds which were usually 5 to 10 miles less than cars. All the rest about media screaming and pet projects is true also. -
We are new to the industry and I've been shocked to learn this past yr. just how much things have changed. I had a rant one day at someone who has the power to change these rates for the better, and basically, they just stood there and politely listened and when I was done, they figuratively patted me on the head, nodded, and told me the Shippers are the ones I should be ranting at.
I grew up next door to a trucker. He raised 6 kids. You couldn't do that today.
(to staff: sorry...I contributed to this thread getting off topic. I'm moving along now.) -
If they made the speed limits 55 in all states...I'm done driving...I'll go insain...shoot my self in the head four or 5 times...that's why u will never catch me in California. ..they can have it
BigJls1 Thanks this. -
I set the cruise to 58 in California, the 55 zones in Tennessee and my two trips through Oregon. No mess no fuss.
Even took cabbage hill with almost no brake use following the speed limit recommendations with 44k in the box. Who says the Volvo engine brake is worthless?BobcatVolvo Thanks this. -
Run Southern California everyday. My truck is governed at 63, and I keep my foot on it everywhere I go. Never had one issue in 10 years. I've had CHP pass me while I was doing 63.

I live in San Diego and work out of Bakersfield. Mostly haul out of CA to surrounding states.
I usually don't go less than 60, anywhere along CA roads. Mostly doing 65. Of course there are hot spots but you get to know those as you travel those often, and having a really good bird dog truly helps a lot (yes illegal, but so are most paper logs. Just get a good "undetectable" one). Traveling up the 15 from Victorville to Nevada state line, you can typically run 63-64 without a care from CHP so as long as you mind your following distance and you aren't weaving in and out of traffic. The 5 corridor from the Grapevine to Santa Nella can be hot and cold. I've heard first hand experiences of drivers being cited for doing 57. However I've never had an issue. -

and I guess you folks would have had a stroke when the nationwide speed limit was 55.
