OK... I am new to the CDL scene and I understand that CSA2010 has changed things.

I got a speeding ticket in small town, TX for 70 in a 55. The speed limit on that road is 70 then drops to 55 then back to 70 for many miles.

I had my cruise set on 67 thinking that I was ok. I had been watching the speed limit drops but apparently missed this one. This town has a reputation of being a speed trap and a corrupt TX town.

Anyway, I talked to 2 different lawyers. One was between $500-$600 and the other was $850. I cant afford to hire either one.

Any advice that you can share with me?

I am thinking that if I can get the charges dropped to below 70, it wont affect my points as much and I am willing to do that if thats all they will go for.

From my understanding I cant do defensive driving or deferred adjudication because of the CDL.

    Any advice would be appreciated...

Ouch, corrupt local cops and speed traps... that reminds me of the last time I was on US 59, 77, 190, 287... oh wait... it's like that on EVERY highway running through small towns in Texas.

    Sorry it happened to you.

I have traveled through Texas on numerous occasions as well as other rural parts of the country. I don't know if I'd go so far as to call the cops corrupt, but truckers do present some low-hanging fruit for revenue in those jurisdictions.

    1. You are not a local
    2. You have deep pockets
    3. You will more than likely pay rather than dispute the citation
    4. In many cases, a large proportion of the operating budget for law enforcement is funded through such activities. From the city or counties perspective this is a win-win. The tax-payers don't have to pay for the cops yet they get the law enforcement coverage they need.

I don't really see anything corrupt about it, it is definitely parasitic on commercial drivers, don't most of the new GPS receivers have speed limit information?

    Please reread what I said.

I said the town has a reputation of being a speed trap and a corrupt town. I didnt say that I though that they were or not. Based on my research done on the internet, that is my findings but I personally cant say one way or another because thats the only time I have been in that town.

Three weeks ago I made $10 more than unemployment paid while I was looking for a job. That was a typical paycheck. So no, right now I can afford much of anything until I can find a better paying job.
