Do any truckers in here have any advice? I was in a car crash a couple of years ago and walked away with 2 herniated discs and one bulging disc in my lumbar spine. I'm not in constant pain or anything and my legs aren't affected at all. I have no neurological symptoms and I have full strength in my legs and feet. My only problem with it is that I get pain in my lower back, but it's tolerable and I don't take any narcotics. Just some injections every now and then. I've had some back spasms before, but they're rare. Surgery is an option for me, but I'm holding off on that right now because the pain isn't debilitating or anything and I'm only 30 years old. Anyway, I've been working in the trucking industry for the past 5 years at a diesel mechanic shop (not a mechanic, I work in the office), so I know a bit about it, but I'm seriously considering getting into driving. The problem is the surgeon I've seen tells me to avoid a job that involves a lot of bending and heavy lifting so as to not make my situation worse. How physically taxing is this job? Just to be clear, I have no problems sitting in a vehicle for prolonged periods. Sitting is fine for me. Walking long distances and standing for long periods is worse for my back than sitting. Would I be making a mistake getting into this?

If you can pass the DOT physical and drug test you'll be ok.
What are the injections you get; are they a narcotic on the forbidden list for truckers?
There are plenty of trucking jobs that have driver no-touch freight.

    nextgentrucker and ObviousTryHard Thank this.

Thanks for the reply! No, the injections are not narcotic. They're just some steroid injections the doctor puts in my back to reduce inflammation. I get maybe 1 or 2 per year. They're no biggie.

Where is your location? Maybe myself and others on here can help you find a "driver no-touch freight" job.

Sorry, forgot to ask. I assume a rookie driver would have to take what he can get. Is it actually realistic to get a no-touch freight job straight out of CDL training? Or would I have to start with whatever is thrown my way, including physically demanding jobs?

I'm in South Texas. Rio Grande Valley area. I've not gotten a CDL yet or anything. I'm just going over my options right now and I don't want to get into training and spend all that money just for it to end up not working out for me due to my limitations.

It's realistic, just depends on which companies are hiring in your area.

Check with this company about no-touch freight. Don't say anything about your back injury at all and don't be tricked into it because you'll be talking to a recruiter anyway.

Thanks, I appreciate the help. I definitely won't bring it up myself, but if they ask about it, should I tell them? I've had MRIs and all that stuff, so there's definitely medical records of my injury out there.
