Ok so I hear many drivers say if I am going to take 8 hours I might as well take 10; right?
Ok so why is it then drives will shut down for 8-9 hours then take off but log they shut down for 10?
If this doesn't get to you, I am not sure what will!
If you can't sit still 10 hours, but you can sit still 8 hours (OLD RULE'S)
then you NEED TO LEARN HOW TO SPLIT BREAK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I figured it out today(ok so I am 2 years behind, l.o.l.) You take a 2 hour break say about after driving 5 hours. This break is to eat and relax (if the waitress doesn't take forever) for 2 hours! Ok so when your 14 hour is up you take an 8 hour break (instead of 10) then you are on the road again;RIGHT?
It is almost like the 8 hour break, but DOT basically is forcing you to stop during your 11 hour period for a 2 hour break!
LEARN SPLIT BREAKING IF THIS SOUNDS LIKE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I feel you would be safer split breaking, because you would be taking a small break during your 11 hours of driving to freshen up & relax. Personal opinion there, but what do you think?
Again this message is only to get you to see why you should learn how to split break, you need to learn it if you feel you can't sit still (legally) for 10 hours!
I say this because many drivers that log illegal are really legal if they had logged split breaking and knew it!

Great Info to know. Knowing myself, Id probably work my 11 and take a full 10. or is it 14 and then 10? Im still new at this lol. all i know is once im up and running (by running I mean working), im running for the whole day (with a break here and there ofcourse.)

It does save some time, to split break, if you anticipate doing it and are able to plan your stops accordingly, sometimes it works out really well. My problem is, what do you do if you spend 4-6 hours getting loaded, where you don't actually have to be there watching, before we could log 5 hours in the sleeper and extend the 14 by five hours, and I got pretty good at matching up my breaks and driving so I didn't get a violation, now if you run out of hours on the fourteen with driving time left on your 11, I understand you can take 8 hours down starting with when you went into the sleeper and finish the 11,then take 2 hours more in the sleeper, and then drive the same amount of time as before you took the 8 hours in the sleeper.
It gets complicated when you end up taking longer breaks than what you need for the rules, to actually deal with loading and unloading. I never drove under the old rules before 2004, so I don't know how that worked, also 2 hours isn't enough of a nap to matter to me if I'm tired enough to sleep, it works better for me to sleep about 4.5 hours twice a day than 8-10 once. Oversleeping also makes for longer breaks than intended. If i sleep for more than 5-6 hours, I also get very stiff and sore, at home as well as in the truck.
I really am thinking about construction, I did something similar to that for several months and that worked out better for me than regional line-haul or OTR, long distance OTR was always better when I got to do it but most of what I do is less than 11 hours 1-way.

Sounds like you understand splitting and yeah the problem of being held up 5-6 hours really stinks, BUT if you can pull out and pull on the street to get the remaining of the break that would work, BUT that does not always happen so therefore you would have to consider that your 2, but it still helps in pushing out the 14 hour rule after your 8 hour break.
You don't have to sleep on the 2 hour break, you can stay off duty for the whole 2 hour break, but I mentioned eat and relax to settle the food.
I will say construction is worse than trucking (I think). My bf did construction and I HATED IT FOR THE MOST PART! He is working for 12.00 an hour and it is less money in the summer, but I know what money I can count on! Before you go to construction, think about a 12.00 hr job first! He was drywall worker and yeah winter we starved! Thanksgiving one year , we didn't have it!!!!!!! He is a worker and will work his butt off if there was work! But I relate trucking and Construction as the same (only because of down time, if you are down a week, you can't make it up in the trucking world).
In situations you are held up at shippers you could then start to split break and make sure you look at all options to stay there if at all possible!

Truck driving or operating heavy machinery is what I would do, for far more than 12 dollars an hour, I hauled tanker loads and made good money at $11 with all the overtime, however that work was very sporadic, and quite frankly, I don't make that much now unless I have all of the loads scheduled to run without cancellations; sitting at home watching this forum or what is on the tube isn't at all lucrative, and factory work which involves standing on concrete floors for 8 or more hours is impossible as is sitting on a hard seat, I am tolerant of driving and that is about it. Union pay-scale on federal highway projects is amazing, the other thing I am considering is hauling hot asphalt cement in tankers as a company driver again going local. I did that before as an OTR driver. Thanks for the help, BTW I appreciate it.

Ok so the construction you are talking about sounds much better than waiting on loads! l.o.l. Yeah good money there! Good luck to what ever you do! I always say to my man as long as you are happy and there is STEADY money coming in we will do better than no check 1 week!

I heard that you cant extend your 14 by split breaking? I think the guy I was talking to said that you can equal your 10 by it but you couldnt go past your 14. I dont really know though.

Yes you can extend your 14 hour but only with an 8 hour sleeper break that is it! I will be back later to explain if you need me to! I have in below post refer to them and they explain basics without pictures

The 8 hour break in effect starts the 14 over but the driving times on each side of the 8 must add up to 11 hours or less,at that point (11 hours driving time) you need to quit driving and then you can resume driving after logging 2 hours on line 1 or 2, the driving time on both sides of the two hours must also equal 11 hours or less when added together.

You got the right idea! The thing when drivers only concentrate on the driving time, they tend to violate the 14 hour rule!
The best way to put how the 8 hour "SLEEPER" break works is that it extends the 14 hour!
If you count over 8 hours from when your original 14 hour ended that would be when your 14 hour ends. So it would basically be 14 + 8 = (so I start @ 12:00 am (normal 14 hour) my original 14 would end @ 2:00 pm. An 8.5 hr sleeper break would make my 14 hour really end @ 10:00 pm
12:00 am to 2:00 pm (14 hour time frame)
2:00 to 10:00 pm (8.5 hours after 2:00 pm)
The driving time is simple:
Add up driving time IN BETWEEN the 8 & 2 and do this with the answer
11-(total hours in between 2 breaks)= (driving hours availabl) after your 2nd break.
I tried to explain a different way this time for those who have read my past messages to see if they really got it!
25 you are not far off, you sound like you are getting it! Remember the 14 hour though, this is what gets most drivers anyhow.
