I am confused right now and to tired to go back. I think I was talking about what she could of done to help herself!
If you understand the 2 hours or more does not extend the 14 hour that's the most important thing;.
If you sleep 7.75 hours during your 14 hour you still must shut down and take an 8 hour sleeper break (if you want to split break that is).
I will check sometime this weekend.
I wish more would be more into understanding their DOT regulations

I'm back into driving after being off road for 10 years,.. I have just finsihed studying the DOT examples and I cannot figure out why there are 14 hour violations in examples 6, 7 & 8???? I think I'm missing the resets maybe??? -
I'm still tryin' In DOT example #5 they say there's a 14 hr violation on day 2 at 5pm. Why???
driver had 8 hrs sleeper 7pm-3am (14 hours would be next day # 5pm)
drove 3am-5am
then sleeper from 5am- 1pm, another 8 hours. Is there no reset here? -
Because it needs to be a 10 hour break. -
Ok let me see if I can talk through this

The original 14 hour started # 5:00 am. So his original 14 hour ended # 7:00 pm. He drove 4 stop took a 6 hour sleeper break (which this 6 does not extend the 14 hour so he still had to stop DRIVING by 7:00 pm) he goes on-duty for 30 min. He takes a 9.5 hour OFF DUTY break. The problem here is the 8 hour break or more MUST be in the SLEEPER! GRRRR I stressed that enough you should know that.
Had he taken 9.5 hours in the sleeper he would of went to the end of the 6 hour break and counted over 14+9.5= 23.5 hrs.

The examples are of split break. They was focusing on teaching drivers how to split break because that's the only thing that changed in October.
But a 10 would have reset the 14 hour clock. -
Okay,
After a little more than two weeks on the road I have learned, the 14 hour rule is BS and if you use all 11 hours you have a day to drive you will have to shut down because you will run out of hours! (your company ain't going to like that!)
I have learned that most drivers under these new rules are "recreating" log sheets every day to gain work time and/or shorten their work day to start their 10 hour break earlier to get back on the road. For me, 10 hours is too long to have to sit, if I sleep for 6, I'm ready to go. And counting sleep or off duty time as part of a 14 hour day almost forces you to change your book at the end of the day to pick up valuable work hours. I have spoken to a number of drivers at shippers, receivers and truck stops and they all agree, that's why companies are giving drivers loose leaf log pages now. No more pads that DOT can look at to see of sheets have been removed...
The company runs us hard and if I want to make money I have to run hard. When I told a dispatcher I only had 2.75 hours to drive after he told me my pickup was 4-5 hours away, he put me on the phone with the Safety Director and I was told, "be creative"!!
I have also found out it is a learning experience to do logs under the new rules, and split logging right now is too ###### confusing!

Thanks so much for posting this. I've been driving in the oilfields where we had very strange HOS exemptions. This will help a lot in the transition to OTR.

Just remember when you are being creative do not go past the time that there may be evidence of you being at one spot at a certain time like fuel stops prepass going through scales etc.
I use to be creative like that was the best thing my trainer taught me on my 1st week with him he told me if you want to make money and not be out of hours and have to sit you have to do it this way.
We would try and fuel at night when we were stopping. We also had prepass in his truck he would stick it under his leg if he knew that the scale was closed so it would not register.
