your safety guy is wrong. 2 can be any combination of off duty and sleeper as long as it's 2 uninterrupted hours. The 8 must be in the sleeper. Had a guy last night that asked to be swtiched to sleeper, shop took his truck to international for maintenance, I'm about 100% certain he wasn't in the sleeper.

Montana is correct, your safety guy is wrong...

Here I am!
Sazook hit it right on.
395.1(g)(1)(ii) Specific requirements. The following rules apply in determining compliance with paragraph (g)(1)(i) of this section:
(A) The term equivalent of at least 10 consecutive hours off duty means a period of
(1) At least 8 but less than 10 consecutive hours in a sleeper berth, and
(2) A separate period of at least 2 but less than 10 consecutive hours either in the sleeper berth or off duty, or any combination thereof.
And don't forget when splitting your sleeper time -
(B) Calculation of the driving limit includes all driving time; compliance must be re-calculated from the end of the first of the two periods used to comply with paragraph (g)(1)(ii)(A) of this section.sazook Thanks this. -
All this talk of how to set up the rest periods is useful. However...... I still don't know where to put my pre and post trips. Does that just not matter to anyone? Can't you get cited for leaving those out?
My current thinking is that I should log pre/post trip for the 8 hours sleeper, but it doesn't seem to make sense to pre/post trip the 2 hours. It's only 2 hours. What would have changed?
Do you think I'll get cited if I do things that way? -
you have to log pre at the beginning of your work shift. and post at the end of your work shift. not at your breaks.
but some companies like ours simply allow a 5 min pre right on the driving line. and a post on duty.
ok. now here's the kicker. i've now been informed that we can't split the 10. it has to be one session. you can split the session but it still has to equate to 10.
in other words. the onduty portion is one session and the off duty is one session. NO taking a 2, completing your shift then taking the remaining 8., has to be a complete 10 before starting the next shift.
what some of us have been referring as a split. really isn't apparently. according to scalemaster also.
WHAT A BEACH -
look at that page. that would seem to be the case. 10 hours total. before driving.
