After 8 or more sleeper, your 14 is exactly where you left it when you went on break. In your example you were 9 hours into your 14. When you come off your break, you start at 9 hours into your 14.
You have 5 hours of your 14 left to work with.
After you take your 2, just pretend that the 8 you took was a 10. Your day is now calculated from 17:00.
From 17:00 you used up 3 of your 11 and 5 of your 14. (The 2 counts against your 14)
You have 8 hours driving and 9 hours left on your 14.

Unless they've fixed the programming Peoplenet does it wrong as well because it will allow you to do an 8 and "gain" your time back, but will not create violation if you do not/have not complete(d) a 2.

Its one of those things that is better to explain to someone, in person, with a logbook. I use a split at least 2 times a month. I'll get pulled into a scale for logbook check and the officers never say anything. The DOT auditor was clueless on it. He had to ask 3 people in his office about it, none of them had a clue. I finally called a CHP friend in California I know to explain it to him. I know he stilled did not understand, but just took the word of the Highway Patrolmen.
Most of my friends that have small fleets tell their drivers only take a 10 he break, because the auditors are stupid. Sad but true most the time.Meltom Thanks this. -
Just my opinion ? But the split sleeper thing is useless

simple, the hours driven before your sleeper is subtracted from your available driven hours, the sum is how many you can drive on your next shift.
So if you drive 4 hours then sleeper for 2 hours you can only drive 6 hours then you have to take you 8 hour sleeper which will give you 4 hours avalible to drive. This will keep repeating till you take 10 consective off duty or sleeper.
Foeget about worrying on the 14 so much, if your logging lots in on duty not driving your screwing youe self anyway.
IMHO. Do not exceed your 14 hour clock. except for on the 8 -
I use it all the time. It's quite useful in my experience.
The 14 is running whether you're off duty or on duty.
I run out my 14 almost every day yet rarely drive over 8 or 9 hours.
Different jobs have different concerns. -

By far not useless take a 2hr instead of a 30 min then take your 8 and your back rolling get a keep the cycle going and you now get to have your full 14hrs instead of 13.5
