This is actually not a question on how to do a split sleeper, I got that down. But....
I just recently had to sit through a mandatory safety meeting and they went over logs big time. The company was DOT audited a couple of months ago so they are passing the butt-chewing down the line to the drivers but something came up that suprised me.
According to the safety guy you are no longer allowed to do a split sleeper. Is this a company policy? Can they do that? If it is allowable by the regs, then can they just say no? Have the regs changed to where you are not allowed to split sleeper time any more and I just missed it?
I have only been with the company for a couple of months and it looks like I am going to have some log violations for the logs that I have turned in. I didn't get a chance to talk to the guy, but I think I will place a call and just explain that I wasn't aware of some of the procedures before they start handing down the disciplanary actions.
Thanks,
Dave

The only "approved split" is 8 "consecutive" hours in the sleeper then 2 more either in the sleeper or 2 more off duty. No more 6 and 4 or 5 and 5 or 7 and 3.
The 14 hour clock does stop while your in the sleeper for those 8 hours but you do not get a fresh 14 hour work window nor do you get a fresh 11 hour driving period. So for practicality sake the split has been gutted.
I do not advocate using it at all due to the fact you would only need 2 more hours to get a fresh 14 hour work window and another 11 hours of driving (provided you have not maxed out your 70/8 day rule or 60/7 day rule.
Too many drivers do the split wrong and are making mistakes on their logs so this may be why your company told you not to use it. -
I am a log Manager and went through a DOT audit myself about 2-3 months ago. Let me explain split breaking:
You can split break! The company does have the right to tell you "not" to split break. Let me also explain these companies are making it hard on "ME".
My opinion is that if you understood and knew all the regulations you would not need to run illegal. I have seen to MANY DRIVERS logging a 10 hour break, but really only stopping for 7-8 hours. It's a matter of them stopping for 2 hours during their day and taking an 8 hour break # the end of their 14 hour day and realizing how many hours after they could drive. But to many companies would rather give up on you guys as to training you on "how to split break" seriously I have gotten some attention from drivers when I teach them and they get to understand it and realize wow I have lost money in the past and guess what? So has the company, let alone the stress the dispatcher had relaying loads etc. It's a messed up world and always has been on split breaking. I personally feel I am the only auditor that will take the time to explain it and get you to understand so you know it and use it and thank me later
. Even if you use it once or twice it helped you and I feel better.
But if they are going to be reaudited; it would be safer for them to say don't split break. I could see that point, however if they trained correctly in the first place it would not be an issue. I will be working on my company after the "rules" are final and I know it will stay the same for a while. It only benifiets the company and yourself. It does not benifiet me, so why do I care to teach you? Because it helps you make money in many cases
I would not worry about the violations as you was told on that particular day, most companies will go from the day you was notified. -
I got in trouble with this not long ago and had to attend a log class to get points dropped from my company. You yard birds did not tell me I could no longer use the split other than a 8-2.
My wife called me one day and said I had gotten a warning from mav about points on my record. She said the letter said I violated the 14 hr rule. I called safety and challenged it saying I extended my drive time with a 6-4 split. I was then informed you can no longer do this. I was on the road when the 1st HOS changed, but did not know they changed it again. They told me if I took a class the points would drop or fall off in a year!

Why doesn't it show me responding on the "new post"?

Well, the way it worked out for me I thought it was a perfect opportunity to use the split. I drove a couple of hours back to the yard to pick up a preloaded trailer after a 10 hour break. It was Friday and I was heading home with the next load to be off the next couple of days. The trailer wasn't ready. They had some problem, etc. with the load and it was 9 hours before they got it ready. I logged 9 in the sleeper and drove 2 hours home. I am positive that I logged it properly as a split, but now the company is saying I can't do that. I know it was legal as far as the regs go.

Umm how many times have I talked about split breaking on this message board? I have a "split breaking" sheet as a sticky thread and I have discussed it many times since 10-1-05! HELLO! You darn monkeys never listen always wanting to monkey around and never listen to the one's who know it all! Love you monkey
Let me tell you what you did wrong! Send me a copy of that log
-
As long as you didn't drive more than 9 hours prior to that 9 hour sleeper break you was legal on the 11 hour rule and it depends what else you logged for the 14 hour rule, but I am assuming you was legal (for real, I believe you) and they shoud not write u up for doing it right & legal by DOT regulations.
I am sure they will give you from the date they told you about the conversation, if they don't please tell me about it because that would be BULL!
