Good day all. Wanna be trucker here.

I have spondylolysis/spondylolisthesis at the L5-S1 Vertebrae. Does anyone know if this would disqualify me from getting a CDL? If I could get a CDL would a trucking company still hire me?

Just want to know so I don't end up wasting my time...

Thanks in advance for your answers.

    -Kevin

Shouldn't disqualify you, as long as it's not affecting your motor skills or giving you weakness in the legs. My dad had degenerative disc disease along with that, and drove until he had spinal fusion surgery, and even drove after his spinal fusion. As long as it's not interfering with your movement, etc you don't even have to mention it.

Glad I could help! I have back problems of my own, so I have learned a lot of the various issues with the back.

If too much slippage occurs, the bones may begin to press on nerves and surgery may be necessary to correct the condition.

now here-in lies a problem or two..

these trucks no matter the suspension system they have, will kick you in the butt on a daily basis. i think you will be in severe pain real quick.

some trucking companies, (Schneider was one) used to send you for back x-rays. now if found you have this, but yet you did NOT mention it on the application..?? you may have been fired. now comes another question, do you mention this to employers at application time..?? do you mention this to the DOT doctor..??

if you DO mention it to the company, they may MAKE YOU correct BEFORE you go to work for them.

if you mention this to the DOT doctor...?? he may reject you.

it's going to be an insurance quagmire. you lie, they can fire you. you lie, and get away with it, but later get hurt and need surgery, they may fire you, if the reporting doctor informs the company you had a "pre-existing condition"...you may end up with NO insurance coverage to pay for the operation that was just performed on you.

if you cannot get this corrected, then i would not recommend you become a trucker.

if you can get this corrected, then go for it..

trucking IS NOT a cushy job by any means....your back IS IMPORTANT to you, get hurt loading or unloading a trailer, or just getting out of the truck the wrong way, can send you to the emergency room....wanna chance it..??

I can tell yah this is a very big point for all drivers new and older.. Having a back problem while out there pounding those roads is in it self dangerous. Any meds takin is also dangerous as they alter you r mind and muscles. Ur mind and chemical balance in the body changes dramatically, too. If you have a problem get it fixed, if you can and go back to the roads a safer person. Having said this, 4 bulging discs later is not any fun and fighting for medical treatment is not a walk in the park either.Comp. is the pits, too. Although driving the roads may not be a way of life any more,it's been an amazing trip that made this life interesting ...

I have it, and prolonged sitting is very painful, and I'm a Veteran at stage 1, almost stage 2.
If it causes stenosis, it is a disability qualifier.
Lack of treatment can lead to paralysis. Google it.
I personally don't recommend driving as an occupation with this condition.
I also wouldn't risk losing insurance for treatment.
    Good luck!
