Probably the same thing PDANet does. It staggers the flow of data so it doesn't look constant. That annoyed me enough to turn it off. Fact is, there's no way to hide large amounts of usage as they can always see the totals on their end. They own the network, the servers, all the equipment, they can see everything. As long as you don't abuse the hell out of it, they've got bigger things to worry about and will leave you alone.

It seems it's been mentioned a few times that at&t and Verizon once had unlimited plans as well before the iPhone came along. Also, sprint was fully unlimited on data usage, until now. Because of the iPhone?? I've never had or even used an iPhone before but what's the deal with iPhones and taking away unlimited data usage privileges?
Hopefully Sprint goes no further with this data cap stuff and just leaves it at tethering, hotspot and air cards.
As far as the tethering and the WiFi hotspot stuff, in a way, I kinda understand the reason for the cap but is it necessary on an air card(USB modem)? At least with my 3g/4g data card I use for my laptop, it has it's own number. I pay sixty dollars a month just for this.
I guess it's a good thing my wife and I use our EVO 4G smartphones instead of our laptop to browse the net, read/send e-mail, look up YouTube videos, or almost anything else you would do with a laptop pc. -
Verizon still does. You just can't get into it any longer - unless you enable tethering. (HINT!)

That's what I liked about my blackberry with Alltel. The program that was on the software disk that came with the phone had a USB tethering option. The night I found out I could use my curve as a tethered modem, i called up Alltel and asked if I would be charged for using my phone as a tethered modem. They said, "If you ordered the subscription, it was a thirty-dollar a month charge." I said, "Hmmm..... Well, I never paid extra to use my phone as a tethered modem." They asked how I was doing it and I said it was because the blackberry desktop software has the option on it.
I dunno, unless any new blackberry users chime in, it wouldn't surprise me at all if At&T, Verizon or Sprint figured out a way to block it just like how Verizon supposedly locked out the GPS function so that if you refused to pay them the $9.99 a month for the Verizon navigator app, you couldn't use the built-in GPS on your phone. -
The built in tether option on HTC/Motorola phones from Verizon or Sprint are disabled w/o a plan. I believe rooting the phone gets around that.
PdaNet works fine for me. It still counts against my 5GB of data on Verizon but any normal internet usage (w/o streaming netflix) never comes close to this.
I dont use it to 'hide' usage. I use it for the purpose it was intended. So I can surf on the laptop... -
Actually, the only thing so far that gripes me about Sprint is that they charge you thirty bucks a month for both the tethered internet and the WiFi hotspot. I believe those two features need to be divided up the tethering feature a little cheaper considering that with tethering, your only supplying internet to one device as opposed to 5 devices with the WiFi hotspot.

I use a Motorola xoom tablet with Verizon 4G service. The xoom tablet comes with a tethering option built in and is not disabled by Verizon. You can use the tether anytime without additional costs. I paid full price for the tablet so no contract for me just month to month $30.00. Verizon doesn't care if I tether and will let me use all the data GBs I pay for each and every month, without any throttling or other performance penalties.

You guys know that you can turn pretty much any laptop into a hotspot by setting up an adhock wireless network, right?

I called sprint a few weeks ago about getting a tether plan added to my account. The woman told me it was not available on the Blackberry. Well I guess that was just after they cut the service. I did a search and found http://tether.com . It works pretty good as long as I get 4 or 5 bars I can watch my favorite TV shows. And I don't have to pay extra for it.
