that's what every company wants now. years ago it was "experience." before that it was "college degree." how can you be expected to have stable employment in an unstable economy?

I've been out of work for over a year. so far, I haven't found any company that wants to talk to me other than a few of the monster mega companies who have to keep hiring new people because their current drivers are quitting because of no miles. my CDL expires at the end of the month. should I even bother renewing it? I just don't have the heart to go back to the starting line - AGAIN.

I have that question as well. I have worked in the chemical/refinery industry for the past 10 years with no gaps in that time period. I was laid off and have not been able to get back into the field for close to a year now. I'm about to give up on it. Will this year long hiatus from my last job hinder me? I understand my picken's are slim.

Could be worse. Try this out: college degree that is apparently "useless" experience that is "irrelevant" to the degree, and "unstable" work history. Here I was thinking that developing a background in several industries while on summer breaks would be seen as ambitious. How foolish.

The modern way of operating with "Human Resources Professionals" and their methods of deciding whom is and isn't qualified is asinine at best.

As to the CDL, I plan on never letting mine go (regardless of which industry I work in) but I'm involved in an Antique Truck Club and use it recreationally.

Good luck; if you can swing the cost of renewal, keeping it probably won't hurt you.

it's not a matter of the cost of renewal, it's just like, what's the point if I can't get another job? there are plenty of people who have been out of work for a year or two. what are they all supposed to do? just never work again?

Chief, I would think of it this way, if all of a sudden not even the mega companies would take you..............how would that make you feel??? Now that we got that in perspective a bit, consider this, if you go back to square one, it's not really starting over...really.... you will be able to advance much faster than anyone starting all over and maybe after a year of getting fully back up to snuff, who knows maybe the doors will swing wide open for you on the smaller company side of things, hey, it looks like you've been heavy hauling maybe once you're back rolling one of those companies will pick you up: the thing to do is get moving, don't stop, if you stop cold nothing happens, it's only when you're moving down the road when you can come up on opportunity, now with that being said, get up! and get movin! soldier! go get with Swift or somethin crazy, just to make a statement "I'm Movin"! hope that helps, Jo Bernard

I understand what you are saying now. The question then becomes: do you want to continue with the trucking industry? Do you see a CDL ever being useful again? Do you see the process to get it back worthwhile if it were to become useful again?

It seems there are always more questions than answers. Wish I could be more helpful.

ABOUT CHRIS: I called this dude, he left a comment on one of my posts. Kinda weird, I Googled his phone, its an INDIANA phone number, he told me he was a dispatcher for a company out of CHICAGO, and he had a truck in LAS VEGAS that he wanted me to drive between New Mexico and Canada. He had a THICK Indian (Not Native American) Accent. Said his company was IPX or some such thing, I could never find it online. He also said he would Fax me a resume, I never got it.
Oh yeah almost forgot, it got real weird when after I told him my name and said I was calling about the driveing job, his first words were "How soon can you be in Vegas to pick up my truck". No questions about my history, not a mention of an application, nothing.

Anyways, thats the lowdown I got on CHRIS, the Spammer.
