Star Transportation Of Nashville Tn..wow! when i was recruited i was told .36cpm, 2000+ miles per week and home 48 out of 52 weekends a year.
Now i've been in trucking since 1999, and i know recuiters will lie to you. But i've never seen this befor.
I have been on time with every load that wasnt late when i got and i have not turned down any loads.
During orientation the .36cpm turnes out to be .32, .20cpm taxible,.12cpm per diem and .04cpm corp. taxes. huh never herd that one befor. And home time went to you'll be home 3 out of 4 weekends.
I've been here for 12 weeks, and i just paid the company $240 to go home after 2 and 1/2 weeks out wrather then sit in chattanooga all weekend.
In fact out of 12 weeks i've only got to go home 5 times, and i had to fight for hours with my dispatcher to get that.
I live off I40 between nashville and memphis, and there are terminals in both cities. But my dispatcher tells me there is no freight going home.
He also tells me that "we dont guarantee any home time".
I average 1400 miles a week with at least 1 24hr. layover a week, no home time and a dispatcher who just dose not care, and that seems to be the view most of the higher ups have.
Save yourself a lot of pain and frustration, look else where for a job, theres a reason they run two orientation classes a week of 25 drivers each and still have a third of the fleet empty.

STAR TRANSPORTATION...REAL BAD. IN CLOSE TO 20 YRS AS A DRIVER, (few yrs at star) THIS IS BY FAR THE WORST COMPANY I HAVE EVER WORKED FOR. THEY DEDUCT MONEY FROM YOUR CHECK EVERY WK IF YOU IDLE OVER THE 30% MAX THEY HAVE SET IN THE QUALCOMM SYSTEM(100 degrees in florida, 10 degrees in chicago, they dont care, they need to save fuel and u WILL idle at 30% or else)...AVG 2000-2200 MILES A WEEK, YOU CAN IDLE ABOUT 2-3 NIGHTS, 8-10 HRS STRAIGHT BEFORE U HIT THE 30%. I NEVER WENT OVER 55% IN THE BRUTAL HEAT OF SUMMER OR DEAD OF WINTER AND THEY DEDUCTED AN AVG 0F $40 A WEEK.

STAR ALSO DROPPED MILEAGE PAY ON 1 AUG 2009 BY 1.5cpm...IN MY CASE THAT WAS ANOTHER $40 FROM MY CHECK. U ARE CHARGED $7.50 FOR EVERY ADVANCE. U ARE CHARGED $2 FOR PAYROLL PROCESSING...note(STAR HAS BOUGHT ABOUT 200 NEW TRUCKS WITH CARRIER IDLE PACKS SO U ARE LUCKY IF U GET 1 OF THESE TRUCKS). I NOTICED THEY DONT GO BY LENGTH OF TIME IN INDUSTRY OR TIME AT STAR FOR A NEW TRUCK...THEY REPLACED THE TRUCKS ACCORDING TO TRUCK #.

THEY HAVE STARTED KEEPING DRIVERS OUT 2 WEEKS AT A TIME NOW...AND WILL RUN U TILL U SAY GO HOME. U USED TO BE HOME EVERY WKND. NOT ANY LONGER. THEY STILL HAVE PROBLEMS OF SITTING U FOR 24-30 HRS (2/3 times a month)...U GET $35 layover...(but they are famous for letting u sit for 23.5 hrs, and then sending a load to your qualcomm). IF IN DALLAS TX, ORLANDO FL, ON FRIDAY...60%-75% OF TIME U WILL SIT THE WKND. AROUND JUNE THEY DROPPED TRUCK FLEET DOWN 100 TRUCKS TO 500 AND LET GO ABOUT HALF THEIR DISPATCHERS/SHOP PEOPLE/STAFF. THEY CLOSED TERMINAL IN JACKSON MS..JUST HAVE DROP YARD NOW. MY EXP HAD ME OUT EVERY OTHER WKND..AND I GROSSED JUST $24,000 LAST YEAR (BARELY ABOVE POVERTY LEVEL)..REMEMBER I HAVE 20 YRS EXP SO MY MILEAGE PAY IS AT TOP @34.5 CM.

DISPATCHERS ARE A LITTLE WORSE/LESS CARING/LESS FLEXIBLE, THAN I HAVE SEEN IN MY 20 YEARS AT OTHER COMPANIES. SAFETY IS STRICT ON SAFETY/LOGS...DISPATCHERS COULD CARE LESS ABOUT YOUR LOGS JUST LIKE OTHER COMPANIES. IT IS A CONSTANT BATTLE WITH YOUR DISPATCHER, WHO COULD CARE LESS ABOUT YOUR HOURS AND WHAT SAFETY SAYS. ALSO ALL TRUCKS ARE GOVEREND FROM 63 TO 68. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND LOOKING ELSEWHERE BEFORE COMING HERE..I PLAN TO LEAVE IN DEC 2009 BECAUSE OF THE LOW PAY..AND DISPATCHER ATTITUDES. GOOD POINTS..UUUUUUHHHHHHHHHH...NONE?

That's really a shame to hear. I worked for Star several times and overall had good experiences there. Keep in mind, though, my last time with them ended in early 2004.

While they were never the highest paying company in terms of per mile rates, their dispatchers were good overall and the miles were decent. My problems started there when my dispatcher got promoted. He was great, maybe the best I've ever had at any company...guess that's why he got promoted! But after that, things went down hill.

Following the Covenant takeover, I've heard nothing but bad things from the few Star drivers I've chatted with. And it really is a shame...they were a good company to be with back then.

Good luck, man...hope things work out for you!

That is a shame, living in Nashville, I see their trucks all over and recently I have seen some other companies hauling their freight, and I wondered what happened? I sent my neighbor down to see them, he is a newbe just out off school & needed training. I was shocked when they told him they did not train anymore and he needed 1 year.

Whoa! They quit training...I'm surprised. Their senior OTR driver was a trainer...made dang good money at it, and was a good trainer from all I heard.

That's gonna hurt the wallet. Of course, it could resume when the economy rebounds.

no not a case of post and go, just dont get on here much any more since Star blacklisted me.
Take it as you will, i live in the boonies where truckin is pritty much all there is for work.
    And the facts are this:
2 Monthes ago or so ( almost 3 now i think-i've lost track) i completed a 2 wk notice that i was quiting.
I cleaned my truck out and parked it on star's yard and turned in my keys and fuel card.
Next week i get my paycheck with fees for recovering a abandond truck 300bux worth of fees.when asked about it was put on hold and promptly hung up on.
Ive got a clen mvr and till now a clean dac, but i have applied with every company i can thing of since i quit star, and have not herd from any of them.
Theres is too many truckers out here nowadays, so go work for star they'll take good care of your career for you..godbless and good luck to all of you
