Well after, reading, wondering and waiting for something to change w/ my employment situation I am moving forward w/my new trucking career. I am very relieved to have a plan. I am waiting to here if I can get any assistance for part of the tuition, WIA program. I heard they are runnng out of money. :biggrin_25510:As soon as I get the word it's off to school. I have already been their twice and am impressed w/ the program. I have sent out some apps to make sure atleast I can get a prehire before spending the money on school. I know that it really does'nt mean much but I figure if I can't even get one prehire before starting school, I need to rethink my plan. :biggrin_25511:
I will update as my process changes-Liteguy

Be careful going off a pre-hire. I think a man with one only left leg and 1 right arm could get a pre-hire at a lot of trucking co's.:biggrin_2554:

What more can I do?? I have very few choices, can't trust what recruiters say, prehires don't mean anything, schools will say what you want to hear.
I m at a point in my life that I have few choices. I have been in construction for 27 years. It is one of the worst hit jobs in the worst recession in 60 years. I get no unemployment, just found out today that the WIA program is out of money until july 2010. I have never recieved one cent from any program in my life, and when I need it, it's out of money. :biggrin_25516:
So I do what I think is right for me. I read alot of negative on here about getting into this business, and I beleive alot of it, but right now it's a job.
I have sat around looking for 6 months, every job I go to has hundreds of people applying for one position, and thats for $7.50 hour
I am also getting into this because I want to, even though I am doing it sooner than I wanted to, I will remain here after everyone else runs to a better job after things pick up.
I know it's bad, and I think it will be bad through out 2010, but I would rather work than sit at home. I have worked my a@$ off all my life, thats all I know.
If there is a better way to start in this career please let me know, I would love the break.
And the company's I am thinking about are May, Gordon and Werner, what can I say.
I appreiciate all you ol boy's input, I've learned to listen to experience, priceless:biggrin_25514:-Liteguy

A couple things. Where do you think that material comes from for the construction biz? There are 1000's of students coming through trucking schools since their line of work vanished. Where did all the material that those jobs needed to stay in business before they went belly up come from? What do you suppose those drivers all hauling now? $7.50 per hour? That is not very much I see why you are looking elsewhere. Trucking is 70 hours per week. If you are taking home 400 bucks a week trucking with no over time and say you are spending 100 bucks a week to survive out here per week. How much do you reckon your getting paid per hour?:biggrin_2554:

I don't plan on getting rich doing this. I also realize I must put in my dues and don't mind the low starting pay. If I had to go to school to start anything else I would'nt be paid a thing, and then I would still be working for garbage wages to start.:biggrin_25517:

You should call various trucking companies and see if they hire out of your area. If they are, you should have no problem getting on somewhere. It turns out I am not in a good area, but I still found a place to work. Once I get that experience I can move on to something more local.
