Your best bet is to LEARN HOW TO SHIFT!.....It can be intimidating to some folks , but try going back to where you relieved your initial schooling/training and see if they'll let you re-enter there and do some refresher training. Most schools will let you for free ( as long as you're a former student I think)..If you are seriously considering the trucking industry as a career you won't do your self any favors by NOT mastering a stick/double clutching. There WILL come a time you'll be expected to know how..albeit on a road test or after you have a break-down and your dispatcher makes the call to re-power you with a rental tractor..odds are that rental won't be be an auto.....newbietrucker007, blairandgretchen and Cman301 Thank this.

Tony is right...i came into trucking from office work....32 years old and never backed a trailer or drove a stick of any kind....had ridden in my uncles truck but never drove one...it was intimidating at first but once u practice it it just becokes second nature and u just dont think about it. If u cant float double clutch....that is what i do....i could never figure out how to float so i still double clutch and it is a lot eaiser for me....my trainer, when i was with him, had ben dricing 7 years at the time and he still misses gears once in a while....my uncle has driven for 30 plus years and he misses too....so learn to shift....it will be better in the long run.

Trans Am has all automatics. But I would still suggest learning stick.

Carter Express is a ##### company. I worked there almost 10 years. When the company had 2-300 drivers it wasn't to bad. Now its near or over 1k and they suck. Dispatchers are paid 9-10hr and you get what you pay for.
Management is a crock of..... Ownership doesn't care. Yes there trucks are all automatics and a Volvos. Top hourly pay is 16hr and top mileage pay is .35 mile. I made .32 15 years ago. This is a company of convenience and that's it. Meaning your wife has a good paying job and money doesn't matter, so you can work there and be home a decent amount. Only thing this company is good for. -
This was my problem when istarted. The instructors at my cdl school were so impatient with teaching how to shift they actually terrified some students into quitting on the spot. I barely made it and was so worriey company trainer would be the same way I went with company that only had autos. Big mstake since I never learned shifting. When I got fed up with the company I had nowhere else to go cuz I couldnt pass roadtest. Now I at a point Iin my life im ready to go back but I gonna have to go through training again cuz I let cdl lapse.

Swift is supposedly going to switch to all automatics as they replace their fleet. In the Millis forum a trainer said their new trucks are going to be automatics. More and more companies are going all automatic for better fuel economy, driver comfort and less fatigue, and it is 'supposedly' safer cause the driver can focus more on the road and traffic and not have to think about shifting and rpms and all that.
E logs, drive cams, and now automatic transmissions is the next thing that will be on every almost truck soon.
