Hi, I have money saved up and Plan on investing into 2-3 trucks with reefers. I live in south Texas so I Plan on hauling manly produce all over the east side of the Rockies. I plan to have drivers on the trucks while I keep working my job in the oilfield . I have about 300k to start with so About 100k per truck and trailer. . What do you guys recommend to buy with this budget? I know prices are high but so are hauling rates so I’m hoping that could offset the truck and trailer price over time.

When you buy three trucks it works like this:
    1st Truck is broke down
2nd truck is paying for truck #1
    3rd truck is making money.

That's if you somehow manage to keep a driver in all 3 which you won't. $100000 per truck/trailer isn't going to get you far right now.

Before you invest in equipment....find the first driver!! And remember this, good drivers already have jobs! Once you find the first good driver, put him to work and have him or her help you find your second driver. And give them a referral bonus for doing so. Yes rates are high, but so are expenses. Keep the balance of the $300K in the bank to pay for the first truck and driver. If the rates remain as they are, then use profit from the first truck to cover the cost of the second unit.

New trucks break down and parts needed to fix or replace are weeks out on backorder. But the bills will keep coming!

Go to Vegas and after the hookers and blow are paid for put the rest of it on red, you have about the same odds

On a serious note I would find a decent ira/high interest savings account etc to put a chunk of that in, so it’s still there when the market tanks, notice I said when not if…

if you are going to go the old route - then find a truck that is pre emissions. Built before 2006. But before you do that...find a mechanic, (for all of your trucks). Have him look at any truck you're thinking of buying. Used truck prices are so high right now that folks are practically pulling junk out of the weeds and slapping cheap tires and a chrome bumper on it and getting top dollar from the chumps. Don't get burned. Paying a mechanic a couple hundred dollars and a steak dinner is a whole lot cheaper than throwing away 50 grand! Find a mechanic who comes with recommendations from the trucking community. Put him on retainer. Treat him like a beloved family member. Remember...it is cheaper to maintain a truck on your schedule and at your location than to repair it on the road.

Most of all - do your due diligence and be patient. Hidden treasure normally does not have a neon sign telling you where it is.

300k is about the price of a used truck and used reefer right now plus a little extra for start up costs. Used reefers are going for over 100k right now.
