Make friends with your local tow companies. The reason being that unless they're big, they probably don't offer an in-house service truck. Some simple things they might be able to handle, or might not. For instance we have a service truck, for tire changes, lock Smith services, etc. But none of us are qualified mechanics, so our services in that aspect are limited. We have a mechanic we work with who can do just about anything you need. And if he needs it towed to the shop, we got you covered.

As another eluded to... take some time and/or money an get a website. Nothing fancy mind you. Basic and to the point.

A cyber footprint if you will. Post up on Craigslist in the areas your willing to travel to. Not all mobile mechanics want to travel far. Business cards also like others stated. Anywhere you can leave them that caters to trucks if that's going to be your niche. You don't want Judy with the minivan calling you if you only work on big rigs.

Post in other places also online. Forums like this if they have a services section. Lots of forums have a version of it. Others mentioned truck stops, and the like.

Connect with any groups that do roadside service for big trucks if there are any big groups similar to a Triple A, etc. They usually keep a list of service providers. Mobile, Tows, etc. No clue who would do that for big trucks tho.

Take your time, do good work, have those people you do work for give you good reviews online. More an more people are relying on such. Make sure you have a social network presence. Facebook, twitter, etc.

The secret to such things is to get the word out. This day an age it's easy to do so, good or bad keep that in mind. Do good work and the rest will come.

Good luck, seems like a good niche to fill and seems to always be a need for a mobile mechanic.

Don’t work cheap. My best honest mechanic and now my tire guy both threw in the towel.I told both of them they’re working too hard and too cheap.Like equipment you’ll wear out too fast. I’m sure you know a signed work order is a must with Strangers just in case of disputes. Unwilling to sign would raise suspicion for me.Id rather pay $120 hr for knowledgeable Tech than $50 hr for guesswork.I imagine a few local accounts for steady income while allowing flexibility for emergency road calls.Mobil has advantages lower overhead. My guess is lots of room for growth.Need local work for word of mouth references.Companies with small fleets sometimes better than actual Trucking Companies IMO. Need to be familiar with com check- T checks- Efs etc as well as Mobil visa app. for roadside work .All easy to set up with a little knowledge. No one wants to pay a Mechanic what they’re worth these days. Good ones very hard to find.Self Employment is the way to go.Risky yes but also more secure as your livelyhood depends on You not others.Do it or else you’ll always wonder what if? While you have the ambition. The Industry needs good Players more than ever. As mentioned best to have good relations with all in the local industry.Up front honesty is most important. Difficult communication needs to be clear up front just spit it out. That way less surprises. You should do well.

i have been doing this for years and like others have said do not just accept something like the checks mentioned above unless you yourself call and get an authorization number as i have had some drivers try that in the past and they filled in bogus auth numbers and also never release a vehicle unless you are paid in full and the check is registered to you or your company you are starting if you have any questions please let me know and i will be happy to help another person get his foot in
