Just wanted to check in and introduce myself. I am a newbe that will be headed to Millington later this month. Anyone have a list of things that were helpful when in school? I am nervous but looking forward to the career change as I will be a second generation driver. My dad was a driver when he was alive. I have been on the fence for about 2 years but decided to take the plunge. Thanks for all the post good and bad it has been very helpful in my decision on going with Swift. I am trying to get on a dedicated account right off so wish me luck.:biggrin_25514:

Read all you can on these forums. Be a sponge and soak it all in. Most of it is very good information and soon enough you will be able to smell the roses and the BS. Best of luck to you!

I started my journey in Millington on 10/3 and I am headed into orientation on Monday. The process can seem overwhelming and can be frustrating at times, but just step back, take a breath and keep your focus. If there is anyway you can drive to Millington do it. On Monday morning of your first week do not, I repeat DO NOT have any caffiene before your physical. Blood pressure can send you right back home. If you need any detailed info feel free to PM me and I will do what I can to help.

Also, do NOT drink a bunch of soft drinks before your physical. It can throw your sugar off and you will not pass your physical. I have had drivers fail for their sugar being too high.

Thanks for the info. Much appreciated and keep it coming.
I am really interested in the dollar general account after training. What are my chances of
getting dedicated right off the bat? I want to
stay in shape that's why I like the dg account. Thanks again guys.

It's possible to get on a dedicated account to start but not likely. It helps a lot if your mentor is on the account. It really comes down to how badly they need people. It can't hurt to ask but I would be ready to go OTR 48 and be pleasantly surprised if you do get on the DG account.

As far as what to bring to Millington I'd make sure to have some rain gear. You will be out there regardless of what the weather does and if you don't need it there you will at some point. There is a grocery store and drug store a short walk from the hotel and kitchen in the room so you can eat cheap if you want. Other than that just enough clothes to get you by,some pens, white out and a ruler is all you really need. The lighter you pack the less crap you have to lug around with you.

I'm a current student in Lewiston, so here's my $0.02:
Attitude makes more difference than anything. There's a lot to learn and it comes at you fast, but there's a lot of repetition (some of which seems unnecessary) and a lot of stuff you may disagree with. Don't get too confident, bored, or frustrated - keep your mind and heart open to whatever there is to learn in the moment. At the same time, have patience with yourself when it seems there's too much to learn, it's too hard, you're not figuring it out - it's that way for everyone sometimes. Take a breath and start over and learn whatever you can.

Eat breakfast. Drink plenty. Get out of the motel sometimes - take a walk somewhere or find a way to do something fun. Get to bed early. Take care of yourself and you'll be in a better position to learn. Have fun!

Thanks Alex. I'm excited to start. I have to go get my
Cdl permit and physical on Monday and I should be all set
For school. I just hope it comes quick to me as far as driving.
In the past I have been a very quick learner driving large vehicles.
Biggest thing I have driven is an 8ton in the military with
A split 10 speed hauling ammo.. I enjoyed your school postings by the way,I have
Been studying these foums a lot.

Im planning on heading there soon myself, I would however like to find out if its possible to pay for my own hotel room, so I dont have to share with 3 other people, 2 to a room I could handle, but seems 4 to a room may be a bit much, if not I can suck it up and deal, but I also plan on driving down from MI as well..so at least I can have my own transportation there..anyway good luck to you
