Baker, the reason I am not using my gi bill is a timing issue. I need to make a career change now and from what I was told it could take anywhere from 90-120 days to get the gi bill to pay for anything and I dont have that kind of time to hold out. Bills are piling up fast. Also I do plan on submitting after the fact for the on the job training pay while with a mentor.

Good luck to you RKD. I just finished in Millington and am getting ready to start my mentorship out of Atlanta tomorrow. Some of the things you will want to pay particular attention to are the map tests and the log tests. Use every minute of your practice time in the truck. The school was WAY overbooked when I was there and it was particularly difficult to get all your time in. Find a group of students that will work with you. As has been stated before, teamwork is necessary. Don't expect the instructors to "teach" you. They will demonstrate the basics once or twice, but after that you're on your own. If you really have to have them, they're there, but they generally expect you to do it on your own. If you don't pass all of your skills tests in the first 2 weeks, they will put you on probation for 1 week. If you don't pass then, they will charge an extra $750 for another week of training. (Thank God I didn't have to go that route, but lots of people in my class did.) The rooms are not so bad at the Admiralty Inn. There are 4 twin beds in each room. There is a small kitchen, a bathroom, and a couple of chairs and a TV. You'll need a ruler, a calculator, and a couple of pens (make sure they're black). It's alot like a bootcamp for truckers. Be prepared for any kind of weather. Today it's nearly 70 and the sun is shining, but tomorrow it may be 30 and raining cats and dogs. Either way, you'll be right there in it. I'll be seeing you on the road soon.

Just finished Millington and my road training week in Inver Grove. The two weeks at Millington were long, and hard, but proved to me how bad I want this. I felt pretty proud when I boarded the Greyhound home, with my CDL in hand.

Just remember, stay off Kenny's cones, and all will go well!

How Does it work in millington, Im going in January, and Im confused as to how the program works, do you spend two weeks in TN, then go back to your home terminal for 1 week of road training, or do you do that week in TN and go back to the home terminal Just to do the cdl road test?..I already have my CDL A, but been 10 years since I drove so im going back to the school..I do have the chance to go to the school DEC 19th, but wasnt sure what the process would be cause of christmas and new year..Can anyone give me a run down of how it works, or whatever?

Yes, that is how it works. My guess is because you already hold a CDL, you won't have the state testing that the rest of us do, but you will have to pass Swift's course. Because you've done it before, albeit long ago, the training will go faster and you might spend less time on a mentor's truck.
