starting at roehl on feb 26

whats up
i will be starting with roehl march 31st at gary in.
i was wondering about the per-diem options, roehl wants to lower my
per mile from 32 to 30.5 cents and put .10 aside for per-diem.
my brother drives truck and says i should keep my .32 and claim the
maximum amount of deductions on my w2 and claim per-diem at the
end of the year. this sounds risky, any suggestions thanks

 

I submitted my app online about a week ago; how long does it take to get a response from TMC? Ive been out of the truck for a year and looking to get back.

 

i can't tell you what is best, but the per-diem option can hurt you. for instance, it lowers your gross taxable income, possibly damaging your ability to finance a car/house. also, social security benefits are based on what you pay in and this would be reduced by taking the per-diem. i am married w/ 3 kids. on my w-4 i always mark married w/ 2 dependents, and never opt in to per-diem. come tax time, i actually claim 5 dependents (since irs allows you to claim yourself). i know this is giving the feds an interest free loan all year, if you wanna look at it that way. my thinking (and my wife) is that we would rather give up the money all year when we won't miss it instead of taking a chance of owing money come tax time. make sure you keep copies of your logs for the entire year to justify claiming standard per diem w/ irs for all your days out come tax time.
