Well the first day of orentation was cool. I met alot of nice people here at the terminal (drivers and office staff). Today it was mostly paper work and some safety videos. There is only one other lady in orientation with me. They provide us breakfast and lunch. I was told they do alot of paper loads and they used an example load of the paper plant in carllton,oh on the quallcom training today. They also are starting to use the e-logs too. Because I am a student driver I will go out with a trainer for 4 to 5 weeks before I get my own truck. Tomorrow will be the last day of orientation then I will wait on my trainer to arrive. I am very comfortable with the company and policies so far. I will keep everyone updated, I am kinda tired so imma get some rest. Thanks everyone and be safe out there.

Last day of orientation went well. We had a road test, watched more safety videos, and more paper work. I will find out more info about my trainer tomorrow morning. I did really well on my road test today, and whoever says deboer had bad equipment is WRONG! We drove a Volvo auto shift today and it rode great. I love driving it. I think im going to love deboer. I like it because they get to know you personally and not just as a truck number. Well thats all for today...ill get back with it tomorrow...

The road test was about an hour long. I drove with the 53 foot trailer which I connected (hooked). We did a pre trip, drove around the town, into the city, parked at a fuel station, drove back to the terminal, and did some backing manuvers, slide tandems, properly unhooked the trailer, and a post trip. It consists of alot of two lane roads and highways. Most of their company fleet are Volvo and a few Freightliners, mostly all auto shift, some 10 speed manuals.

    Hello Mr2nite,

I will be part of the deBoer team soon. I have two years OTR experience and I report there on the 25th of Jan.

I will be looking forward to the new company and hope to meet you one day along the way. You are going to go far with the outlook on life you seem to have.

    Cheers, Tim

    Mr2nite,
It is lonely at times but that goes for life in general also. OTR trucking is a life style in its own. You either adjust or you just plain love it from the get go . I love it. That does not mean it is happy go lucky each and every day for me.

Many folks get in this biz with a pictured formed in their heads that it will be like this or that. You cannot go into it in such a way. You must be open minded and realize it is a job and it is a stressful job at that, especially at the start.

The big companies advertise it as if you are on a vacation traveling this country and getting paid as you go. Not even close.

As you go along you will find things that will occupy you when you are out there sitting for whatever reasons. If you find that this is for you Mr2nite you will make things work. You will know in a month or two if this job is what you want for the long haul.

You may find someone that you are compatible with and team up. There is more money but finding the right team mate is not easy.

Try and slow it all down and live in the moment. First and foremost plan your trips wisely this will make the job much better for you and the company you are driving for.

Ask the old timers for tips and ask lots of questions that you have. Be sure and ask drivers that seem to have it going for themselves, they will more than likely be happy to share their experience with you.

Get in a routine of doing your pre-trips and post-trips. Stay away from bad habits. Be aware of what is going on around you always. Drive the posted speed limit or 1 to 3 mph under. Try not to idle. Saving fuel will take you places with the company and your career. Use the cruise control. Be safe, safe, safe.

    Good Day, Tim
