So I start the ffe drivers Academy in 2 weeks I have a fantastic business plan to start my own business in this industry and this is a career I really want to succeed in. I have already gotten my learners permit on my own the only thing I need to do is get my endorsements for air brakes and general knowledge. Then they teach me how to drive the truck and proper shifting and pretty trip inspection. You only get 2 chances to pass your class a cdl exam with them and I want to pass this first try. Can any experienced truckers please give me some advice so I can really nail this and get it down first shot. Any input is appreciated. Thank you for your time.

    I have a couple questions:

Who is "They"? FFE or the DMV? And in order for you to get your Class A permit, you have to already do the air brakes, general knowledge and combination vehicle, right? For the license, you have to do the pre trip and road test. Then THEY, (at that point would be FFE) would train you. You say that you only have 2 chances to pass...who told you this, FFE or the DMV?

So what's your plan to get from the DMV to FFE? Or is FFE handling everything from the permit on?

But at this point, my advice to you is to not let your fantastic business plan be based on pulling a box.

ffe is ''frozen food express'' a company that hauls only reefer. the dmv gives u unlimited tries at the test but you only get 2 tries with ffe, if u fail both your own your own. and i got my learners permit after i passed the ''combination vehicles'' and ''general knowledge'' portions of the test..

So FFE is doing everything. What is the next step in the process...you go through orientation and get into a trainer's truck or do you have to do a road test in orientation?

Just make sure to dress nice for the pretty trip inspection - no catsup stains on your wife beater and cutoffs

So, you're a little worried about failing the road test AFTER training, and you are looking for an edge.

Okay remember this: no one was hired to win a popularity contest. Got that? If you don't like the trainer or the trainer doesn't like you is moot. Get over it. Do not let differences in opinions come between you and your immediate goal. If he can ace that driving test, you can learn from him. If you are having difficulty understanding, tell him, "Hey guy, I rode the short bus to school and licked the windows and the Windex accumulation has slowed my thought process a bit. Can you break it down a little bit for a slow learner?" When he's making turns, watch the trailer in the mirrors. Don't be texting or on the phone...you're here to learn.

Stay in touch with the people here on TTR. There is a thread started by someone that signed a contract to drive for a specified period of time, but now this person doesn't want to live up to his/her end of the bargain. And the reasoning is, because this company didn't teach anything that wasn't prior knowledge. Also this person touts a friend left this company and went to another and got trained there. Reaaaallllly????? Could that be true? Doubtful. If you were issued a truck and you hauled freight, you were trained enough. That whole drama is a sure sign of poisoning from negative talk. Negative poison affects the color of the grass so that the grass that you're standing on doesn't look as green as the grass that's a distance away. Your short term goal is for the trainer to sign off on you and you run some solo miles for a bit. Your long term goal is to buy your own and own your own. The most valuable thing that you will bring with you from any training company to your own business is your name. Do what you say you're going to do. If you sign a contract with FFE to drive a year, drive a year. Driving is what you make it. Be absolutely sure that's what you want to do before you sign anything.

If you get on with them, do not allow anyone to convince you to jump to greener pastures before your arrangement with that company ends.

    Luck in battle.

thank you very much triplesix. my biggest worry is taking tight turns on smaller roads with mild traffic around and angled backing like having to park in a crowded rest stop. i just hope i can get those 2 down because i feel that if i can get good at those 2 i can be a awesome trucker due to my liking for travel and driving and always being in a different place.
