You're worried about immigration laws? LOL... This is the USA, we dont check papers, its illegal to ask someone if they are a legal citizen.

I've spent the better part of a year researching the options for going to the USA, the EB-5 Visa is the one you are referring to, that problem is you need to invest all that money off the bat, so one would probably have very little money left for running costs and spare cash for keeping you head above water - day to day living costs and buying a car and house etc, non business related items. With the Canadian visa equivalent you only need to prove you have $300 000 net worth, pay a $75 000 deposit to the government that you can apply to have back after 6 months of operating your business, once you show you are actually running a business & then finally, you need to invest $150 000 into your business over a 2 year period, that's taking your running expenses like fuel costs etc into account also so it shouldn't be too difficult.

I agree, things are not the same at all with regards to the operation of things, but hey, i'm willing to learn and it seems there's a fantastic bunch of people out there willing to help :)
As far as back home goes, the rules are just going to get more one-sided as far as i can see, so before the civilized world decides we decent Africans are not civilized enough to live in their lands, i want to get out while i can. I don't want to raise my kids here in a land of hate, only to have their dreams shattered because of their skin color once they grow up. I mean my brother-in-law is a young highly qualified civil engineer and he cant get a job with a big firm for that reason. They have even gone so far as to tell him that to his face! The land is becoming way too chaotic, just look at all the violent strikes in the last 12 months. I think since i got back from the USA in July, one or other group has been on strike ever since and it just keeps getting worse!

As I have said It will be interesting to follow your progress as I could very well follow suit.
Two of the most important people in my company are emigrating to the US in 3 weeks (It is going to hurt my business).
One of my original partners has been there for about 5 years.
I have a bunch of family there as well.
I just cant get the timing right as business is still good but I don't know for how much longer.
How do you shut a good business to start up somewhere where you are a nobody and somewhat of an outsider?
It is a bit like having an investment that is doing well but you know it is a bubble.

Yes, but that only works for the ones that come illegaly to this country. If your are doing it the right way it can be such a pain in the rear and I do speak from experience since I have legally immigrated to Canada and the US. I have been in the US since 1994 and took my US citizenship in 2004.

One of the biggest obstacles I had encountered back in 94 for was rules and laws were constantly changing and nobody was ever up on it and things seemed to change everytime you would visit the consulate. I learned to carry the whole file and plenty of extra copies of things you needed.

If I would come to this country right now I am not sure I would jump in and buy a couple trucks right away, but if it is part of the immigration it changed everything. It might not be the most profitable business to start out with, but if it gets you and your family into the country that is worth a lot too.

I have met several people from SA over the last couple years and they all have the same story on how things have changed and sooner or later this great country will be in the same state than the Congo, Mali, Ivory Coast and all the other poor African countries.

Good luck to your move and maybe do not consider the money you need to invest as the only deciding factor since being alive and freedom are priceless.

Last piece of advise that comes to mind would to find somebody that could help as an consultant on the starting out in the trucking business. Some money spent there could save you a lot of money in the long run. There are plenty of great and successful owner operators out here. Maybe do a search for Farm2Fleet or BigBadBill. No I am not related and get anything for referring anybody, but I have read good stuff about BBB and Farm2 Fleet and he would be on top of my short list if I wanted to go from company driver to owner operator to check in with.

    Good luck to you
