in refence to startig a trucking company, well that a good thing in my pinion BUT you got to be carefull these days freight is a little slow so they tell me even though i have had no problems finding freight.
as far as the trailer you want to pull well i guess the best way to answer that is what do you like to do? my opinion again i pull a step deck and i haul heavy equipment and machiner and o.d. loads the rate is higher and more consistant.
a dry van well the rates are usally pretty cheap and a reefer well the rates are good most of the time BUT you have to run and run hard all the time . i started out with a reefer many years ago i gace it up just cant keep the pace anymore.
hope this helped you a little . southern comfort

I agree that reefer is the best bet as windchestor magnum (forgive my spelling) said. Please for goodness sake wait for this economy to improve. Drive for a company and save 50K as thats what you'll need to get going.

    30K for truck
    10K for DOT number, authority
    10K for insurance fees

Then, start your own company and become profitable. Add trucks when you have money for the truck itself, a replacement engine and insurance money. This information is coming from a o/o friend.

Where did this number come from?? DOT filing is $300, serivce of process fee $40-60 (free at OOIDA if you are a member $45 a year) drug testing program $100-$120 a year (ooida is $100 i think). Have insurance company file proper forms ASAP. takes about 3-6 weeks, start haulin! Do not use one of the DOT authority services they are a waste for somthing that is simple.

Insurance numbers are on par (inclues truck/trailer and cargo). You may even get it less with your experience and good driving record, or if you go under a 500 mile radius (as the crow flies, not highway).

I agree. Although stay out of my communist state unless you have a fairly new refer. Because of the CA. emissions requirements, all refer engines must be retro-fitted (or replaced) with an exhaust particulate filter within 7 years of manufacture. So a 2003 is required to be retrofitted or replaced by 2010, 2004 by 2011, etc.
