Heh, yeah, I had problems when originally applying at places as well. Didn't have much of a work history for the year prior to driving.

I really don't understand how the concept of working a job i hated and making a pile of money and then quitting and traveling for a year while blowing it all is that hard to understand. It's not like I was trying to get into the same field. At all. Like, only related thing is that the stuff we used in the office was on a truck at some point.

I sold my business 12 years ago. Hooked up with a young wealthy Italian girl that loved to travel.
Did a ton of traveling . I know how to have a lot of fun on minimum amounts of cash.

Didn't hurt having a 50 ton captains license and many friends with big boats that like to travel.

Been basically semi retired , house is paid off , car and toys paid for.taking care dad last 3 years. He is loaded.

Nope would have been better having just got out of prison I think.

No wonder these companies can't find decent people

If it doesn't pan out I will throw in the towel and borrow some money against my house against my better judgement.
Go test out for my cdl and buy a old pre egr truck and get my authority.
Wanted to eventually get on with Mercer or Landstar but they want a year also.
I think it was 500 to rent a truck and test out up n Tampa even if it took 2 times I would be money ahead for all my time wasted going to school.

The schools are such a Farce at 5 to 7000 and 4 weeks of time. The community college is 8 weeks and 2500, but 8 weeks is a long time with very little driving time.

I can handle 40 cpm if the miles are there. The sleeping in a truck going down the road with who know who training, that just got his cdl 3 months prior but is trying to pay his lease is scary as hell to me.

That last one is one of the bigger reasons I went with Schneider. Training is 3 weeks, but only one of those is with a trainer. And the trainer has to be in the passenger seat while you drive, training. And they don't allow lease drivers to train. And (I'm pretty sure on this one, it might be 9 months) they require a year of experience to become a trainer. Overall, swift mentor program scared the #### out of me.

Id be careful with getting your own license if you want to work for most of the starter companies out here. A lot of them require a school. If you go the o/o route though, not an issue. But.. There will be plenty that'll dissuade you from doing that as well.

Even if you're a natural at it, good luck getting insurance and a broker that will work with you.

Yep the otr training is dam scary to me also .

Just can't believe these companies get away with basically running a team with a complete newbie most likely not getting any sleep during the day while his nearly newbie mentor drives and than the newbie having to drive at night.
Yea I was just going to do the test out last year but everyone busted my nuts on it here, than most companies wouldn't hire you anyways.

Skateboard on here did it the way I was talking, with buying his own truck and just testing out and than got his own authority. No problem.

Just , I hate to risk part of my house for that learning curve, especially in this market.

Even swifts school sounds Hokey. If James is having a bad day sounds like you could be out of the class real quick if you get on his bad side.

How long did it take for Schneider to get you to orientation after you opted out of Swift?

Swift didn't give you crap for not staying at the hotel so they could bed check you?

If I did swift I would go rent a room for a month close, just not to put up with that crap.

One of my best friends owns a 25 year old brokerage.
Skateboard did exactly what I am talking about.

Np with insurance, just a little pricier.

Ha, good ole James. Yeah, it's definitely not a place to get on anyone's bad side.
I applied with Schneider while I was still in school. Had orientation date set before I finished the second week at the school. Got my license on Wednesday and next Tuesday was at Sni.
Swift didn't care about where I was. In Richmond it's actually cheaper to rent a room for a month somewhere than the $500 to share a hotel room with two others. For $500 you can have an apartment in the city for a month. Granted, transportation can be an issue if you don't have your car there. But if you do, they don't care. I may or may not have violated just about every rule while I was there :)

Hopefully I can get on with Roehl once I get up to Michigan next week. They shot me down when I applied 3 months ago from Florida..

I spoke with Schneider last year when they said if I did 6 months with them I could get into the Choice program, or a year otr with someone else.

So looked into schools. Just wasn't happy parting with 5 grand and another 3grand for living expenses

I have given up on the Choice program since, getting to be to competitive.

In my almost 3 years here I have seen a lot of people go off to the programs all Starry eyed , only to never here from them again.

    Come to think of it

If Skateboard was a gentleman, very Questionable.

He would sell me his rig and trailer for no money down and train me for a week out of the Goodness of his Heart.
