I like other guys want to change careers. I have decided to start out with class B HAZMAT and, if I like it, parhaps one day move up to CDL A. I drove Dodge and Mack R9's (5,000 gallon straight tank trucks) in the Air Force, but our checkpoints were not as detailed as the pre-trip inspections required for Idaho. For right now, I am studying the manual hard and the one thing that is hard to visualize in preparation for the pre-trip inspection of the test are the parts of a truck I have never seen such as spacer rings. Some things are difficult to understand such as air brake systems. Would it then be worth my time and money to get a trainer's permit and hire somebody to show me these things?

why don't you go to your local community college & see if they have a truck driver course & if they do, take the cdl course through them.

Why not go for the class A and then you can drive both? Why limit your opportunities?

well sure, you "could" hire someone to teach you, but would that person be teaching you bad habits or GOOD habits...........??
then too, many employers WANT to see proper schooling as your background, not "joe schmoe"...........
and as someone else mentioned, getting the class A-CDL would be better for you in several ways.........first, the cost right now, would be cheaper over all. if you wait, say even only 6 months, most chances are, there will be an increase in prices, and by the way, (say) right now it costs you $3,000 fro a B license, and (say) the A license costs $4,000...........
well when you WANT to go for the A license..........??
you're GOING TO BE PAYING the $4,000...........(or higher due to price increases).........so, what do you accomplish, paying MORE MONEY, when you could have saved some money..........????
just a thought.

I've posted this before, but to remind....
There's a pending law that will require all new CDL drivers get their instruction from an accredited school, with a minimum of xxx (don't recall the number) of program hours. Saw this in Landline magazine some time ago.
